iframe style but not iframe ... ?

Here's the problem ... I'm no web-building wizard but have made decent ordinary websites in WYSIWYG programs but I need to make a page that has news links down the left, say about 15 links, and when you click on each link the news content opens on the right hand side of the page.

I looked at iFrames but they seem to come in for a lot of scorn from proper web builders.

Can anyone help with this task ... please keep it simple and treat me like an idiot when explaining any solutions

I was thinking of doing that but the news items will be added to a lot and thought the "iframe" way or similar might keep the amount of content on the server down ... maybe I'm wrong, hence my question
