IGN UK Reviews MGS4 (no spoilers)

I do care about stories, but it's possible to present them better.
Bioshock, The Darkness and Mass Effect are all games in the last 12 months with a much better story that weren't taken up by ridiculous cut-scenes.

It appears they got a person who isn't really an MGS fan by admittance to review it. Doesn't make sense, you get racing game fans to review racing games, shooting fans to review FPSes, so why deviate from the norm and dock the game points just because there's a crowd out there that wouldn't make head nor tale of MGS?

The EG review isn't quite as bad as GTA4 getting high scores everywhere but it still doesn't make sense.
So what do you want exactly? All games reviewed by fans of the series, thus giving them undeservedly high marks like GTA4, or have them reviewed by people who aren't died-in-the-wool converts, and may actually mark the game somewhat objectively, but then doing your beloved games a supposed disservice?

Mass effect's story is inferior to their previous efforts particularly when compared to knights of the old republic. Mass effect lacked many of the twists and turns knights had and most characters had interesting backgrounds. The gameplay in mass effect is much better but is no where near perfect. Hopefully its sequals will surpass it.

Im I the only person who didnt dislike the idea of playing as raiden in mgs 2?

I could easly see what kojima was talking about in the making of dvd that came with the game how he wanted players to see snake from a diffrent angle.
MGS 2 is one of my fav games of all time I have completed about 10 times and I still remember every single little detail.

MGS 3 I didnt really like that much. I think it was because of the 1960s theme I prefer the more futureistic setting of the other metal gears so I only completed that one 3 times and I dont remember much of it.

Cancelled my pre-order as I want to wait until the fans have given their verdict rather than read biased reviews which Konami have given guidelines on what can and cannot be said.

If as has been rumoured it does contain 2 x 90 mins cutscenes then unless you can pause those and resume where you left off think I will be giving this a miss as still recovering from those poor GTA4 cutscenes!!

Quite surprised to read this though:

(Take note, however, that there are several minutes of install time to be endured, not just at the start, but before each act - albeit graced with a fantastic animated graphic of Snake smoking next to some health warnings.)

If that is true, then I don't see how the heck this game is going to be immersive at all...

I'm one of the "Jesus Christ, I haven't Preordered this yet" crew as well :o

Huge Metal Gear fan and I honestly can't believe this isn't on my list.

Gotta finish GTAIV first though, I just can't find time to play it often enough :(

The only thing konami have said shouldnt be mentioned is the story, length of cut scenes and install details. Much better than the GTA4 reviews which most was done in a hotel with rockstar PR there and only based on the first few hours. Im not sure wich reviews you have read that are biased, the only one i can think of is the Eurogamer one written by a self confessed "hater" of somethings MGS, that review was very poor imo. No real mention of gameplay, no mention of the improved camera and controls, just a small paragraph saying its better, but mostly moaning about the cutscenes, complaining about cutscenes in mgs would be like complaining about shooting things in Halo or jumping on platforms in mario. The cutscene length complaints seem dumb when you can skip and pause them at will, just seemed an excuse to me.

(What? I can hope right :p)

edit. Out of interest has the limited edition MGS4 PS3 been confirmed for UK or is it US/JPN only?

I think Nokkon was referring to the presentation of the story, rather than the story itself.

Having to sit through extensive cut scenes can detract from the immersion factor of the game. Even with GTAIV's relatively short cut scenes, nine times out of ten, they're skipped anyway. I hope MGS4 is a different kettle of fish with me, but after getting bored with 3's multiple cut scenes and giving up, I'm not too confident. If they're skippable, I'm happy ;)

MGS will always be a marmite game, personally i love a linear storyline and, assuming they're well done, long cut scenes, but i can easily understand why many others don't.

Shame you skipped the cutscenes in gta4 as the story so far is one of the best in the series. I take it no one here likes watching a good film.

Edit: anyway it's the last metal gear Kojima is directing so cutscene haters will probably cheer ; though I hope he continues to direct and make more unquie games.

I will more than likely pick up MGS4 at some point, but not being a fan of previously ones and the fact that I know nothing about the story I'll just skip the cutscenes and (hopefully) enjoy getting on with playing the game.

While the game is fun, the real impact of the games come from their stories, at least thats how it is for me, that and some usually amazing boss fights.

MGS3 was amazing, and so was the original MGS on PS1.

I've been waiting to preorder because I want to see if the limited edition version will appear again - but it looks like they have truely sold out :( I will go preorder now :(
