Does anyone have a hard time explaining to people what Android is?

I have plenty of friends of have iPhones who all pay extortionate amounts and they refuse to believe that Android is as good as iOS!

Generally I get a lot of "ohh whats that?" - When I explain that it's an Android handset their faces go blank as if to say "android what?"

Silly people :D

Yeahhh, also I resent Apple advertising video calling as if it's some new and magical introduction to the phone market. Damn them and their crack team, they should pay their marketing team handsomely. In fact, I bet they do considering what they charge for their kit!

I have the Galaxy S and several people have called it an iPhone knock-off (through ignorance and also trying to wind me up!). Makes me sad.

I get that as well, but it doesn't help that Samsung decided to make the damn phone look like a 3GS!

so your friends are not as geeky as you

this makes them silly ?

Not at all, they just fail to recognise that Android could be remotely anywhere as good as iOS.

I don't think it's ignorance. After all, Android is crap.

/edit

That's a joke. Can't bring myself to diss Android, even jokingly. Too much win.

iPhone user ignorance or yours? The iPhone is a fine device, exceptionally well put together and with excellent software, both official and home brew.

I am sure android is nice too

I bet if you asked most "normal folk" what android was you'd get the exact same response.

Most people know phones by model, not by the OS it runs.

This isn't an iPhone thing... sorry to disappoint you.

Unfortunately Apple has a habit of appealing to people who want to spent a lot on electronics but don't understand them.

Don't see why this is a bad thing.

Or are we under the impression that everyone has to be a 'geek' to enjoy technology?

I agree with you, the build quality is exceptional and the software is good - I'm not denying that and I'm not saying that all iPhone users are ignorant.

I'd guess it's more that they don't actually understand what Android, or even iOS is - and frankly they probably don't care.

Some people buy a phone, in much the same way they'd buy an item of clothing, or a piece of jewellery. They don't care about 'specs'. If they're not interested, stop wasting your time trying to persuade them, as they've already decided what they want.

That's the thing though - these smartphones aren't cheap and people really should. As they say however, fools and their money are easily parted! Not saying that iphone users are fools, some are, but for many it's the best option. They should just really know why it is before they sink £100's into it in a 2 year contract.

But for some people, they don't care if there's something 'technically' better.

They want an iphone and they're happy to spend those £100's for it. The 'specs' mean nothing to some people, and to many iphone users they've still bought the 'best' phone - even if there are others with a faster cpu, or more flexible OS.

They just judge 'best' in a different way to you. So it really isn't worth worrying about. All you can do is point out the benefits of the alternatives, but if they aren't interested, then just let them be.

Just say it's something from Star Trek: :p

Yawn. No one is interested in an operating system name. They all use mobile phones so they're hardly ignorant. If you're getting upset because your mates have iPhones and you don't, then its more like your fault.

Not everyone wants to micromanage their apps and have uber control over every element. Some people just want a basic device that does all without a ton of user intervention. Not everyone is a geek.

TBH the Galazy S is about as close as Android gets to an iPhone knockoff. The shape and their UI skin is just a ripoff of iPhone 3G(s)'s. :p

Other android phones are not though.
