Ive just bought a Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultra and i would like advice on whether to remove the IHS or not. Ive read some forums that say you dont need to remove it and some that you do for better cooling.
Some IHS have a poor contact internally so removing them will drop temps considerably. Others have good contact and no benefit will be gained. The only way to find out is to try it with the IHS and see what temps you're getting. If you're happy with the temps and the overclock, leave the chip alone.
I wasn't happy with my overclock so chopped off the IHS and it made no difference whatsoever except for making it almost impossible to resell my chip and voiding the warranty.
Removing it is kinda like lapping the northbridge, even if it is making a difference its prob not worth the risk and warrenty voiding for a couple less C's.
Dual core can see some benefit when overclocking, single core will only really see a real benefit if you've got poor IHS contact (normally identified by high temps even with decent cooling).
And as an added bonus - if you remove the IHS you can now crush the core! Personally I wouldn't bother, but if you're handy with a knife in a tight corner...
