hi guys, if a ihs has been removed is it possible to rest it over the core and then paste it up and stick a cooler on it and run it as normal?

Or once its removed is it useless/impossible

I'm fairly certain that once it's been removed you won't be able to get it back on, especially if it's a desoldered Intel.

Why would you want to put it back on, anyway?

If it was soldered like the intel ones then no it's not a good idea to put it back on, otherwise put some decent thermal material on the core and re attached the IHS, perhaps glue the edge and it will look like a new one.

With AMD IHS, yes its fine i've done it often when testing on stock heatsink before using other cooling.

Just be carefull when you mount it, the package is fragile whilst it's loose and watch out for those SMD caps shorting if the IHS "slips" :)

Sure. I removed the IHS from my x2 3800+. Since it didn't got me much further, I put a dab of thermal paste on the core, slapped the IHS on and then stock cooler again. Working excellent atm ;)
