Hi

Thinking about upgrading my current LG Flatron L1960TR (1280:1024)) monitor to a 24in (like pretty much the whole world it seems these days) 1920:1080. The upgrade is driven pretty much by gaming. I've had a good read on the forums but still have a couple of questions. Budget limited to £200 and quite liked the look of the Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS. Had one of their CRTs once and was quite happy with it.

I tend to buy games after 6/12 months as cheaper that way and usually patched buy then. Currently playing The Witcher and have Fallout 3 and BIA-Hells Highway waiting in the wings. Only game I might buy new soon, would be SupCom2 and maybe Bioshock 2.

So....

- Is the above monitor good enough quality for gaming? Comments from anyone owning one would be appreciated. IE. no ghosting etc.

- Would my current graphics card cut the mustard at this resolution (BFG 260GTX OC)? As not looking to upgrade it for 6/8 months until there is more competition in the DX11 market (hint... Nvidia get your finger out). And hopefully prices will have softened by then.

Any comments / suggestions / help appreciated.

Thanks...

i own this monitor i am happy with it to an extent, being my 1st lcd monitor im unsure of somethingthings like should it flicker/tear sometimes on moving videos, cant say iv noticed it in a while mabe iv gotten used to it , the colours are nice but coming from a crt i cant really base it on anything else , i mainly use it for older games like ut99 and sometimes css which i dont see any ghosting on just sometimes some stuttering which have more to do with the ut99 settings then anything else prolly with the 60hz on the screen ( looking to upgrade to a 120hz 22inch mabe soon not sure )

i also use this with my xbox 360 via the hdmi cable and then plug my pc headphones into the monitor jack the monitor runs great when playing mw2 etc much easier to see ppl at 1080p compared to my old bulky tv ,

sry i couldnt be much help with no other experience on other lcd but i thought u should atleast get a reply incase no one else does

ps i dont mention my other games like cod4 etc cause since moving from my crt i cant really play this game smooth , but this has prolly got more to do with my 2gb ram then anything else

my spec is q6600 @ 2.4 2gb ram 8800gtx xp

i loved my iiyama crt... i think this iiyama LCD is a safe bet, especially at the price. Ive heard only positives so i guess theres no underlying flaws.. probably the colours arent as great or viewing angle as a £450 monitor but thats to be expected. i say go for it after checking some good review.

Tbh mate your system is begging for 24" 1920x1080... i have no problems maxing most games with a higher resolution and crapper pc then you. im sure youll be impressed with the results of a monitor upgrade :)

From a review off the net

"The noise production on the 24-inch model is a problem and is even annoying when you are sitting at a normal sitting distance from the monitor: when the brightness is at its highest level (level 100), the monitor functions noiselessly. However, if the backlight is dimmed, an unmistakable, irritating buzzing can be heard."

Anyone able to comment if this is a "real" problem???

I'm in the same boat as you and this is the monitor I've been thinking about buying, I've only heard good things about it from my research.

Still slightly concerned about the "apparent" noise if not running it at 100% brightness!

This is the review that has caused my concern. Though pretty good write up otherwise.

Got to admit, not had a TFT monitor that I've not had to turn the brightness down on before. My current LG , I had to turn it down to 50%, otherwise it would have burned your retina's out!

Any other owners got any comments about this?

Also quite fancy the look of the Acer H243HBbmid but can't find out to much about it. Shame it only has a 2 year warranty as well!

Anyone out there own one thats prepared to try turning the brightness down and reporting back????

There appear to be a couple of folks on the forum interested in this panel, so would be helpful.

On the Iiyama now :) I play FPS's mainly MW2, TF2 and CPMA/Quake online. This monitor is brilliant for the fast paced nature of these games. Responsive like you read about and no ghosting. Very pleased.

Thanks for that. Think I'll take the plunge and order one.

Hows the brightness? Is there really an "issue" with noise from the monitor if you turn the brightness down? Articles have commented on a "buzzing noise".

Thanks...

One B2409HDS ordered from OcUK.

I'll post my comments / observations once it's arrived.

Though I've taken the initiative and added an extension of around 10 ins to the back of my computer desk. As I suspect I shall have to sit a little bit further back from it.

I have my brightness set to 90% on the E2407HDSD purchased from OcUK a few weeks ago.
My set is completely silent, even if I lower the brightness down to the 50% level.

Well... it arrived this afternoon. OcUK dispatch and DPD delivery speedy as usual.

After a couple of hours of playing around. I think I'm suitably impressed.

Not as large / imposing on my desk as I thought it would be (glad of that). Approx the same height as my LG 19 inch (4:3 ratio) monitor, but just around 5 inches wider. I have pushed it back another few inches though, as this seems to give my ageing eyes the best focal position.

No dead pixels according to Dead Pixel Buddy. Though on the black setting (in DPB) I can see what I think people describe as "back light bleeding" at the top / bottom of the screen (not too bad). Though in normal use it's not noticeable at all.

The colour palette on standard setting doesn't appear too bad. Whether it can be "improved" with some proper calibration, not sure. Might have a play around at some point.

Reduced brightness to 75%, as 100% is far to bright for me and no buzzing noise from the monitor on doing this. I can only assume that the monitor that was tested in the O/L review I quoted above, was either faulty, or Iiyama have done something in the on-board power supply to suppress this.

Viewing angles are pretty reasonable for this sort of monitor. Certainly much better than some I've looked at.

The couple of games I've checked... look great in wide-screen. The improved FOV makes for a much improved experience. No noticeable "ghosting" etc.

The fully adjustable stand (& included DVI lead) make it worth the extra £20 over the cheaper version. The stand is very solid and makes it easy to get the perfect viewing position.

I have noticed though, that the ACR is off as standard. Quite happy with this, as I don't like any form of dynamic contrast control in games. IMHO it can make the gaming "experience" less "real". IE. moving from a well lit outside area into say a cave and suddenly it's like someone has switched a light on! Fair enough, in the real world, your eyes do adapt to dark areas.... but most forms of dynamic contract control over do it.

About the only minor gripe (and being pretty picky here) is that the OSD controls while being on the bottom front of the screen (good), are totally invisible without a strong light behind you (or in my case, a small torch). Fair enough you can find them by touch, but some subtle illumination might have helped. Though I suppose this might have been distracting!?

I was quite happy to pay up to around the £250/260 mark for a decent 24 inch monitor. But to be totally honest, I could not see the point in spending any more than I have.

So far, I would heartily recommend this to anyone as a monitor for general use and gaming.
