It seems exhaust prices are at their cheapest on Ebay at the moment, I suppose people aren't wasting their money on motorbikes in the festive season.

Theres an Akrapovic race can up for auction at a great price, problem is it isnt road legal. Any bikers on here using illegal cans? if so, do you experience problems when on the road?

The one I'm after is an Akrapovic Titanium. Are we talking points or ust fines if court?

thanks

Old Bill is becoming more and more aware of trick pipes so it is harder to get away with.
Those that do use them on the road remove the plate that states Not for road use and take a chance.
When pulled you have 50/50 chance on whether old bill is wise to trick pipes. If he is wise then you will be given a ticket to take the bike back to the cop shop with the correct pipe fitted within a certain number of days. if you have been seen being an idiot he will more likely give you a fixxed penalty notice/points/fine.
Cops know about the pipes to be honest and use it when they need to. If you are somewhere they don't want you to be they pull you mention your trick pipe then tell you if you don't *** off home they will nick you for it.
Otherwise they normally ignore it.

Got an Art race can on the NC30. Quiet it aint and it really howls at 14,000rpm.
Not overly fussed about it, tend to keep the revs down through town and villages. May bung a dB killer in at some point.
And it gets through the MOT as well. Since it has no markings at all, it up to the testers discretion(sp).

Buffing off, removing or fitting a "copy" BSI plate are all illegal and likely to get you in serious trouble and fined heavily.

Be aware :)
Course if the seller on eBay had done it (wink, wink) and you weren't "aware" (cough, cough) then it will likely get you past the initial collar.

As said, most UK police won't get you unless there is a complaint ... so go quiet around town :) ( In comparison, when over at Le Mans last year the French police were waving at us and signalling to go !!! )

Akra's are good cans, I find that decent cans are not overly loud, certainly low down anyway, so as long as you're careful in built up areas I doubt you'll have any problems. Wife has a Akra on her 636 and it's nice and quiet low down, I scraped off the not for road use stamp :)

I've had race cans on all my bikes and never had any problems with the police.

Off topic...

When I was in Valencia for the Moto GP, loadsa bikes were flying about with these home made exhausts on haha :D

Some didnt have any cans on at all :)

one of the most annoying sounding things i hear on the road is a bike with illegal exhausts on it.

be it a moped and some 14 year old muppet or a bigger better bike. its annoying as hell! even more so when its on a housing estate.

Well I won the auction, £94.00 for a Race Akrapovic Titanium Can and Link Pipe. Well Impressed!

I text him before buying to ask if the exhaust was silly loud, and he said it went through than MOT fine and wasn't over the top!

Think I'll keep the standard one just incase though!.

Agreed. Some are just plain stupidly loud. The complete tool who gave me a bit of biker rage last week nearly deafened me when he blasted off

Not annoying in the slightest, they sound absolutley amazing, aslong as its IL4 ;P

Pah, IL4's sound pants compared to V-twins (well IMO anyway :p ) Iv'e ridden IL4's for 8 years but have always loved the V-twin noise. Then recently I brought one:

Took a little getting used to after riding IL4's for so long but the overrun sounds amazing :D granted you dont get the top end howl but you do get a nice deep rumbly type noise and the SP-2 does sound good on full chat.

On a note I have used Akro systems on 3bikes now and tend to find they arent silly loud around town and small throttle as they have quite long exhausts. Of course wind it up and they do get noisier. It's those short exhausts that are the noisy ones generally. My Akro system on the SP-2 was an Ebay bargain too. £1150 for the full system normally. It has done 2500miles and I payed £430 for it  totally changed the characteristics of the engine. Next on the shopping list is the power commander etc etc.

I never ride without loud pipes. Hear me, don't kill me.

I've never had a problem with the old bill. Probably because I don't go screaming it through residential areas.

Gixer - just the man i need to talk to!!

(sorry for hijacking thread, seemed silly to make a new one)

I have a silver SP1 aaniversary edition, and cans were always something i'd considered for it - especially Akros.

Thing is i know nothing about them. Do i need to buy specific SP1 cans, or are the cans generic, and the link pipes specific? Any help or info you can throw my way?

Whats a decent price for a good can and pipes? Do i need to make any modifcations to the bike for it to work properly, or is it case of bolting on and enjoying, and save up for a power commander?

tia

First thing I do to a Bike is change the exhaust , keeps the standard one in perfect condition for selling and gives me a little extra visibilty. In nearly 30 years of police harassment ;) I've never had any problems at all :)

Pug, one reason I go for Akropovic full systems is you can use them without any further mods such as Power Commanders etc and the bike wil still run fine. Saying that the bike should run fine too if you just fit end cans (not a full system)

The full system has noticeably changed the characteristics of my SP-2. No longer does it feel naff under 5000rpm as the exhaust along with the flapper mod has totally gotten rid of the big flat spot that was there.

With regards to compatibility if you are just going to fit end cans with link pipes then they must be for an SP-1. This is because the SP-2 has a different size bore for the manifold. If you are going to fit a full system then it doesnt matter as the mount points for the exhaust are exactly the same on the SP-1 as the SP-2.

After reading up many people rave about Sato's for just end cans. These are meant to be top notch quality though are rather loud. Think the info is on RC51.org or something like that. Dan Kyle has downloadable maps for these exhausts on this site. For just end cans though I dont think you will see much difference between any of the top manufacturers such as Akrapovic, Yoshimura, Sato, Arata (these I like too).

It's probably not worth fitting a full system, the only reason I did was because I got it so cheap off ebay! I was initially just looking to get end cans with link pipes as the standard headers are already stainless and the big weight saving is in ditching the exhuasts themselves. If I were you I'd just keep an eye on ebay for some 2nd hand cheapos. People generally take them off when they sell their bikes so I'm sure you will grab a bargain sooner or later :D Be careful with some of the cheaper makes as its been that the packing gets blown out due to the V-twin pulses on those ones.

Of course to get the best out of the cans / system you should really fit a Power Commander. Saying that on the SP-1 its highly regarded as a 'Must Do' anyway due the the fueling setup being snatchy. Many people fit them even to their standard SP-1's to smooth it all out. They changed the setup on the SP-2 but its still not as smooth as the Suzukis I have ridden so I'm looking forward to getting my Power Commander fitted and setup. Should see the benefits of the full system too then. Totally standard my bike was making 124.5(corrected) hp @ the wheel so I should be seeing over 130 I reckon eventually. Though for me the best bit is the low down torque gain, its great!

what do you mean by this matey?

The only thing i've noted as big differences is the fact its real easy to stall when pulling away normally (not quickly) and the fact your fillings fall out if pulling to high a gear. I put these down to the clutch adjustment and "V Twin character" :D

As for the cheap ones on EBay, do you mean any of the brands listed or another cheaper brand?

EDIT: tried emailing your trust addy with some more questions, to avoid derailing further but it bounced back.
