Recently we recieved a letter from our ISP saying they were going to send us a new modem as they were doing line upgrades and the old modem would not be able to handle the speed.
The letter went on to explain that some time after the summer they would be increasing our line speed from the 24 Mb/s down/3 Mb/s up that we are currently on to 50 Mb/s down/5 Mb/s up.
We have since recieved and installed the new modem.
Everything was all well and good but today I started to notice something strange.
Steam was downloading at 5.3 MB/s where normaly it would be around 2.8 MB/s, this new speed is consistent with a 50 Mb/s connection.
At first I thought they had done the upgrades a bit early but speedtest.net still reports my connection as 24 Mb/s and my browser still downloads at 2.6 to 2.8 MB/s
I assume the steam client is in error?
We do have an old buffalo airstation router plugged into the modem as we have never been able to afford the upgrade.
Is it possible that they have actualy done the upgrade but the router is choking the connection using http and steam is using some other protocol that allows it to go full speed?
Like I said I am a bit confused.
