I cannot believe this.

I ordered the WRT54G router believing it had a modem with it, well shortly after i ordered it online from here i found out it didn't, overclockers treated this fine and they picked it up with no charge, thank you for that.

I posted on another forum which many people told me that the WRT54GS does indeed have a modem inside it.

Ok, so i order it once again, and guess what?.. the internet port on the router is a rj45!.

Which router has a modem in it?

Because in the uk modems are extremly scarce and im going to go insane in a second!

Sorry about that ranting, im calm now...

Uhm, does any of you guys know where i can get an ADSL modem with an rj4 port?.. i dont want to mess overclockers around again picking it up.

WRT54G abd WRT54GS does NOT have a modem, they're broadband routers,

if ** on ADSL, then u'll need "ADSL Router" which will have ADSL modem

i'm not sure what you mean?

tell us what you really want for your network, what type of setup? are you on ADSL or cable (NTL or Telewest), how many PCs in your network etc

I assume he means RJ45. Yes, you can get ethernet ADSL modems. They usually cost about the same as an ADSL router.

Yes sorry, i meant RJ45...

Well, its looking to me like im going to just have to send it back once again.

It's so odd that the linksys website thinks everyone has one of these modems, but the modems they expect you to own are non exsistant, i can't quite find the reason as to why they believe that.

Anyway, it's turning out that i will have to send it back once again, the good thing is they are in southhampton and i live on the Isle of Wight, so it won't cost much to send back. I wonder if i should send an enote asking them to pick it up from my house, i am not sure about the rules for this.

thanks for your replies.

If you're an ntl or telewest cable customer, then you will have one of the modems you need to use this router - cable modems have an RJ45 output on them.

Just to complicate things further, that router will work with certain version of DSL (hence why they usually call it a Cable/DSL router), but not the ADSL we have in the UK.

Erm, Overclockers are in Stoke on Trent, not Southampton.

Oh really?.. wow, i thought they were in southampton since they were so quick ar odering.

I used to always oder from NO competitors please! but it was a pain in the ass ordering from sheffield where they are based (i think i have this one correct)

Well, i am with pipex.net with 1mb connection.

i have a modem with the service provider, but its usb. and it doesn't have any other connection.

thanks for tellig me about the further complication.

What router will work with my connection then?..

cheers, tony soprano ;)

Might be an idea to remove the name of that competitor from your post. The problems with that particular competitor isn't down to where they're based, just the fact that they're crap at shipping stuff in under a week.

If you want to use a router with your ADSL, you need to ditch the USB modem and get a router with a built in modem. Something like a Netgear DG834G (ignore the GT - it's rubbish) would do the trick.

three computers
ADSL internet
I have my computer in my room, there's two computer in the living room, and they all have RJ45 cables going to them, so a wireless feature is not needed, but would be a bonus with the added extension if i did want to sometime go wireless.

Why do you guys ahve the same picture, it's confusing.

burbleflop
Why do you think the GT sucks?

Because I made the mistake of buying 22 of them for the company. Never, never again. They were all replaced with DG834G's and not a single one has given me any problems.

Have a look around these forums too, you'll find several people complaining about the DG834GT.

cable routers dont have modems in them. the ADSL equivilant of the WRT54g/s is the WAG354g which funnily enough DOES has an adsl modem built in.

if you can order it, why cant you read the descriptions?

WRT54g
the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.
wag354g
The Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway is the all-in-one solution for Internet connectivity. The ADSL Modem function gives you a blazing fast connection to the Internet, far faster than a dial-up, and without tying up your phone line

lol :D.

You could also just buy a cheapo safecom router for like £20 which would do the job fine, and then connect it to the routers switch.

The thing is, the actual router ( even though terrible ) isn't the MAIN cause of the problem, its the modem it has. I've researched up about it and the modem is sencitive to signals, and if the line isn't extremly good, then it gets cut offs.

I'm hoping that either the wag354g or DG834G has a better modem.

Not only that but the router is rubbish because it cannot accept ports higher than 5k, you also cannot turn the firewall off, it over-heats, it makes a lot of noise, it resets a lot, its weak when it comes to many connections and times out. the list goes on but i won't bother listing all its faults.

And you're considering buying a Netgear?

Applies the majority of Netgear routers. They are crap.
