I know it's more than you wanted to spend, but I just bought the Canoscan LiDE 700F for £83 from Amazon as it does pretty much everything you need until you need professional level stuff doing, and then the price jumps to £250+
The reviews out there are very shoddy affairs, and seem to be influenced by companies paying people for reviews. One such review I read had a terrible scanner coming top because it was £50 and a scanner better than the one I bought coming bottom.
I doubt you'll get many replies as I asked a similar question here a couple of weeks ago and had 104 views and 1 reply. If you don't fancy the scanner I mentioned, try posting the question on talkphotography forums
