So after nearly a year and a long messy battle , I lost my main pc 5820k 980tiSLI etc amongst other things :( .

Im now back in a decent financial position again and have desided on a new build. currently im running an i5 6600k , GTX 1070 combo in my HTPC but its just not cutting production or gaming on 5076 x 1080 / 4096 x 2160 . mainly due to CPU usage befor the GPU grunt runs out but i want bells and whistle and high clocks as this CPU is a pig.

Because i will be using fairly high resolutions ive concidered the trade off at 1080p performance compared to the 7700K is worthwhile for the extra cores and multithreaded workloads whilst being competetive gaming when the bottlenecks shifted to the GPU at 4k / mutlimonitor Res etc.

what is the concensus on the difference in overclocking between the 1700 & 1700x/1800x as that may push my ability to go 1080ti SLI

A 1700 should clock to around 4GHz on a good board (Asus Crosshair) with a good cooling solution (240mm/280mm AIO or high end Air).

From what I've seen the ryzen 7 cpus are all pretty much the same in terms of overclocking. If you draw lucky in the silicone lottery you can expect to max out at 4.1ghz but most seem to hit a wall at the 3.9-4.0 mark.

Cheers guys I'll be fully custom 480mm rad etc havnt got the ins and outs on pump : res etc but no doubt it'll be decent Ek parts this time rather than a budget orientated xspc loop . So temps should be no issue . 1700 perfect then as every penny saved means more GPU grunt and sexier finishing touches . 4.0ghz hopefully will be attainable then . Will go for a good board as wanting this to last me a couple years so all the CPU oomph I can get will be needed
