i have a nice new hp w2207h screen here with a native res of 1680x1050 and have decided to run it through HDMI. i had to create a custom resoltuion and 1280x720 at 720p seemed to fit so i chose that one. yet when i play cod4 in this res i have a 1 inch gap around it, so im abit muddled as to what to set it at.

thanks :)

You would only need 1280x720 for HD Movies, Game at the Native Res or another 16:10 Res of your Choice.

I ran a HDTV from a 7900GTX as new and I could use any Windows Res on the TV as its LCD (dont think it would do so on Plasma).

If your video card can handle it you should be gaming at 1680*1050, games support it, it's the native resolution of the monitor and it will look far better than 1280*720.

As for custom resolutions, there's been bugs in the nvidia drivers on some monitors for ages now - resolutions that should be supported like 1280*800 and 1440*900 just don't show up in the list. So custom resolution is the way round it, and if you look at the flat panel scaling section in the nvidia control panel, you can set the drivers to scale the picture up to fill the screen. Only use lower resolutions when your video card can't handle the native res though.

my video cards an MSI RX3870XT OC edition so it should hopefully be good with higher resolutions. the problem is i am connected up via my hdmi cable, without being in an HDMI mode, my pictures all covered in pink grainyness. so im not sure what to do as my choices are HDMI or standard D-sub :(

HDMI on a monitor should accept the same PC resolution signals as DVI and HD signals 120p etc.

Somethings not right in your settings (check for a display profile driver with HP) and look again at the graphics card settings for the monitor, resolution, refresh rates (dont try to use CRT refresh rates on an LCD, not needed and often dont work).

If the custom resolution had the right colours then that suggests the cable and graphics hdmi connector are at least not duff.
