I want a motherboard for overclcking a i7 920.
At the moment im considering.

Asus P6T deluxe
Biostar x58
Msi Eclipse
Gigabyte x58 Extreme

and others.
Anybody had any experience with overclocking the biostar.
I also dont want it to be too complicated. My target is 4ghz.

Tim

for simplest overclocking, p6t deluxe seems to be a very good choice

im following opinion that the CPU will be the main decider on the overclock and that you will obtain very similar clocks with any of those mobos, but someone prove me wrong!

weigh up features of those boards - careful attention to pci slots/cooling/layout

the gigabyte extreme is really only worth going for over the standard ud5 if you're watercooling the NB and ive just found out thats very debatable seeing as the threads on the NB cooler are fixed 3/8" so useless for vast majority of watercoolers. apart from the adding cooling pipe, same board as ud5 i believe.

ive pre-ordered a foxconn bloodrage from ocuk, going for it because i can watercool it, layout suitable for me and good colour scheme.

ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME. Here is a friends o/c on a 920

I hope he isnt overclocking using that Asus AI suite software. Its hardly a huge clock to proof its the best clocking board.

Personally I went for the Gigabyte UD5, meant to clock as good at the extreme and its a good price.

Hi,

I am playing around with an i7 920 and an Asus P6T WS Pro, getting it setup to put in the office next week and I couldn't help trying a few things out to compare against my Q9650.

Is it just different versions of CPU-Z but mine shows as C0/C1 revison here,

This was a brief run using the stock cooler and Prime, needless to say temps skyrocketed and it fell over as they were going through the 78-80c range, However it did run through Cinebench at 4.0gig.

Cheers, Simon.

Edit. HT on as shown with 1.24V VTT/QPi thingy! and 1.64v mem

going to recommend the Gigabyte EX58

i've got the extreme (but unless watercooling (but the standard block is crap) just buy the UD5, same board, jsut not with the exsessive NB cooler) and its clocking really well so far.

Found the bios very easy to navigate, and just in general easy to clock

currently at 3.5ghz on the stock cooler and temps under prime95 top at 80 (and my case has bad airflow)
and its rock rock stable, had 350 hours of uptime before i had to reboot for a driver upgrade, and it was running perfect!!!

for me, when i was playing around with my overclock, it seemed to post or not post, if the board posts and gets into windows it seems to be perfectly stable. lol

only gripe is i can't get the fan controller to work at all

Is that stable 24/7  ?

Doubt it very much. Temps rose into the high 80's just running PI so prime would no doubt be 100c+. Water would be a minimum for those kinda speeds imo and even then it's gonna be toasty.

HOLY HELL! Just looked at the GA Extreme, what in the blue f*ck is that NB cooler about?! I thought i7 didn't use the NB much because of the onboard memory controller :/ Why does that thing need an industrial sized radiator to cool it, anyone know? Or better yet, has anyone here got one of these who can enlighten us to temps. on the NB under load?
