I currently have all the money ready to order this 'Week Only' full system:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-005-OC

I am intending to run it on Windows Vista 64-bit, for RAM utilisation and general speed.

And, I have some questions regarding the build:

a) Should I go for the optional 4Gb RAM upgrade now, or instead save it for several months and buy a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound-card instead?

b) Although there is the inevitability of hardware being outdated within nanoseconds of the last wave, is it a good buy for the money right now? I've been out of the computer-building scene for quite a few years, and although I am aware of the constant development of new graphics etc, I think that you can never truly be on top of the technology ;P.

Thanks!

The new and improved versions of the GTS and GTX and the new GT are jsut round the corner. id wait. Plus if your getting 64bit get 4gb ovre the soundcard. 4gb ram makes 64 bit run very smoothly indeed.

And tbh. Build it your self, its cheaper and youll learn in the process.

I have built a computer before, but it was a bit of a nightmare. I had to RMA several parts, and the general frustration experienced throughout with having an invalid machine for 2-3 weeks has completely put me off the idea. I don't mind the extra expense of having a pre-built, pre-overclocked machine, and I am generally loyal to OCuK... so why not? :P.

As I mentioned, I am constantly aware of the 'latest and greatest' things that always seem to be coming out. News of the 8800GT fails to excite me, but the 'revamped' GTX may be of interest... do you know if it will be drastically revamped? As long as I have a DX10-capable card I am not too bothered. Plus, I run all of my games @ 1280x960 resolution, so I don't necessarily need the absolute best graphics card.

Thanks for feedback, much appreciated,

As 8igDave said, build it yourself much more satisfying however.
If your worried and want to buy a pre built one then, if your only gaming at that res then why not go with one of the 320mb gts ones and save some money?

a GT should be one of them which excites you the most.

All ofthem are being put on a smaller die so will overclock further and all getting more streme processing points i beleive.

The GTS will be only a few off the current gtx and considering the current GTS overclocks past the GTX stock speeds. Then the GTS should be almsot as powerful as a gtx and 100 quid cheaper.

The GT will be the same as the new GTS but only underclocked i beleive. Therefore its going to be a very good card as you can jsut overclock it :)

the new gtx i presume will get a smaller dies and some mor shader processing points to stop people from overclocking a GTS to be as powerful as it.

O also the serposid ovreclocked ocuk pcs arn't ment to be that good. Some ahvn't been properly stress tested etc and had to be sent back. Some even got the wrong mobo!

Yea, I can't wait till the new GTS and GT. I was about to get the GTX, but I am sure the GTS and GT will be fine. And, yes, wait till maybe the 29th.

I would suggest to build it yourself. It could be more exiting than actually playing the game on high settings :p

NVM, you already tired. Sorry!

Hmm, quite harrowing to hear about the 'problems' with the OCuK pre-builds, but surely they wouldn't want that sort of thing to be discussed on their own Forum :P. Thanks for mentioning it though, it is duly noted.

The news of all of these cards is definitely worth consideration. But, I am already saving 50 quid on the complete machine through the Weekly Sale, so it would soften the blow of buying an older GTX perhaps- haha! I definitely have the fever to buy a new PC now, and the thought of waiting for a month is torture!

Regarding the gaming resolution - graphics card subject: I do have intentions to upgrade to a 22"+ monitor within the next 3-4 months, it is just that I want to get a nice 'future proofed' system under my belt first. My current system is nowhere near up to par to play the latest DX10 titles (Crysis, UT3, CoD4 etc.) and so thus I'm buying the machine before the monitor. So, I hope that addresses the "why not buy 320Mb GTS instead?" question- which was fair comment, may I add.

Thanks again for replies,

If you want to game at 1900 its definitly not future proof. its not possible to do so as you need to get the new cards constantly to run everything with all the eye candy.

Also recommend the 4Gb over soundcard, I've got the X-fi XtremeMusic and while it works ok, support from creative has been astonomically crap and with the imminent arrival of SP1 for Vista which will be dropping DirectSound infavour of a new sound API any sound card bought today would probably be obsolete come SP1.

Thanks a lot for the advice Mossy, I didn't know about the DirectSound fazing-out, that's definitely some good advice for a future proofed machine :).

Also, 8igdave, what if the gaming resolution was maintained at > 1600, on a smaller monitor? If a large LCD monitor requires a commitment to constant GPU upgrades, then I think I'll give it the miss. I have no problem parting with a grand or so every few years, but 300-400 every quarter for a new card is a bit out of my budget. The whole idea of a new 8800 revision next month is definitely worth waiting for, but how fast would OCuK be to include them in their complete systems?

And yes, I am a lethargic devil :P. I really don't have the time or effort to assemble a PC myself, the frustration is too much to bear!

Hmm. So at the moment, my stance is this:

If the 'revised' 8800GTX is somehow 'more expensive', I really can't factor it into my budget, what with the monitor and sound-system being queued up after the tower itself. Henceforth, I may just buy the full system now and lump it with my 'older' 8800GTX, which is still a sterling graphics card- no?

In the immediate future I'll be going for the sound-system first and foremost (~ thanks for the link to Creative Alchemy, has been noted, very useful)- sound system most likely being X-Fi Xtreme with a 5.1 Creative speaker set.

With the news of 'large resolution = large graphics card buying', I guess I'll leave the monitor for a few months, after all, I do have several hundred quids worth of games to be buying :).

Its worth waiting because OCUk will have to shift the old GTX's and they will be on special offers, lower prices etc. You would ahve to ask OCUK them selves if they would put the new GTX's in.

Also you coul dstill buy a large monitor which will run 1920 (or what ever it is i cant rember) and then just turn down the resolution in games when its stressing out the gtx to much.

May sound a little jammy, but, after browsing through some other online computer retail stores:

Would OCuK offer any form of exchange policy if the newer revised 8800GTX's retailed at the same price? Just clutching at straws here :P. The thought of being able to have the system by Tuesday, as opposed to waiting for 4-5 weeks for essentially the same spec, isn't a nice one!
