Just got a new mobile which has a proper 3.5mm headphone jack and im using a pair of ultimate ears superfi 5, the noise on quiet parts of an mp3 and in general is bad, im wondering if its because the headphones are standard and don't have the mic connection, any ideas how to improve it?

I know these kind of headphones pickup more background noise because they're sensitive but this is extreme. :(

I did some tests using a high quality mp3 i created with voice, various frequency's and fx with silent bits, seems the mobile is just noisy and probably not great quality either, my pda produces some noise but seems better quality, my amp produces no noise and sounds very good quality so im guessing i should just find a decent mp3 player but are there any decent and reasonably cheap ones about?

Unfortunatly mobile phones audio circuitry is a bit hit and miss for music playback, some like the SE ones with digital walkman hardware are pretty decent others really rubbish.

Cheap mp3 with excellent sound quality would have to be the Sansa Clip+ which I totally recommend as at less than £40 for 8gb in a matchbox sized case you really can't get better.

You could put some resistors in series with the headphone which would reduce their sensitivity somewhat, it's a bit of a bodge but I've done it with speakers in the past and it's worked. :)
