Why does the wave volume keep muting?

It is driving me INSANE... I'll be watching a dvd and will load a film clip and the wave audio will MUTE...

WHY?

WHY WHY WHY?

Hairy monitor.

As for the actual question. There must be some program that is setting it to mute. Try using VLC media player or another player and see if the same occurs while playing videos. If not then it rules out WMP as the problem.

If using another player doesnt have the same problem then it's most likely a setting somewhere in WMP. If you don't want to hunt through the preferences then try uninstalling then reinstalling WMP.

If using another player doesn't help then try looking through your active processes and services for any that sound like they may be the problem. Try disabling them one at a time until you fix the problem.

That's the best help I can give.

I have had exactly the same problem for the last few months. It is something to do with WMP as VLC, Quicktime, Realplayer all have no problem.
During loading of a file in WMP or if you pause WMP, the wave volume mutes (annoying if you are chatting to someone on TS, and their voice suddenly disappears, but th green light is on). Also annoying when a large video embedded to a website is WMP.
It also happened when I installed Tomb Raider Legend, and it would be very low volume during the first cut scenes and not come back up.
I have tried reinstalling sound card (XFi Fatality), updated and downgraded WMP (currently at version 10).
I would reinstall Windows but I don't want to lose everything atm.
I looked around lots of forums and google but nothing came up.
I might try the new sound drivers, but I doubt it will help.

It appears to happen when WMP exists..... (i.e. on wmp close, WAVE vol. is muted)

Any ideas?
