Ok so I was going to splurge on an all new Haswell rig, but I dunno it just doesn't seem worth it.

My i5 750 / P55 UD3 rig ran at 4.0 GHz when I first bought the bundle, but I lost the profile due to a BIOS reset ages ago. Also, I found my Corsair H50 to be less than stellar in keeping things cool, despite re-applying thermal paste etc.

Anyway I think im going to buy a Mount Doom heatsink from OCUK today (good idea?) and try my first ever overclock. I read this guide:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2009/09/21/overclocking-intel-s-core-i5-750/1

And from what I can work out I just need to do the following? :

- Increase the Base Clock (200Mhz?)

- Disable Turbo boost

- Change the multiplier to x21

- Disable Intel speed step?

- Lower multiplyer on QPI Frequency

- Adjust CPU Voltage, what voltages should I be aiming for on a 4Ghz overclock?

Many thanks for any input! :D

**Edit**

I just had a quick go at a mild OC, how did I do?

All the above sounds about right for what I do with my i5 760.

My cooler doesn't cope with a 4.0Ghz overclock though so run mine at 3.8Ghz with a slight bump in voltage.

That cooler you are buying should do a very good job.

Only thing you don't mention above is that you may need to adjust your memory multiplier so that the memory is still within spec with the overclock.

Ok thanks for your input. What speed should I set my memory too?

Also, I've noticed that if I turn speed step off, the multiplyer reverts from 21 back to 20, even after I save the profile. Ever heard of this before? I guess it's no big deal though if I use x20

I would set your memory as slow as possible so you know that is isn't a factor in the stability of your overclock. Or try using the Xmp profile setting because it's 'pretty good' (i don't know anything about xmp other than I need it on to make my ram 'work').

Ok thanks for the tips. What's the max temps I should be watching out for? I noticed it getting pretty hot during CSGO this morning, proof enough the mount doom was a good idea :D

Ok guys, I installed my 'Mount Doom' heatsink today and it really seems to have done the trick (much cooler than the H50).

I am up to 4GHz where I wanted to be, only Core temp shows fluctuating frequency - why is that? something to do with speed step? if so how do I disabled it as cant seem to find a setting.

Also is my voltage where it should be? Any help much appreciated. :)

1.216v seems a bit low for a stable 4ghz on a 750 and based on the coretemp max temps it doesn't look like you have stability tested it yet?

Not yet no, I have decided to go for a moderate overclock of 3.5Ghz as this will be more than enough for me. Is 1.2V enough for 3.5Ghz?

Should be fine with that at 3.5Ghz, though I run about v1.25 - v1.3 with my cpu at that speed.

Think I may have to invest in a better cooler for my i5 760.

Ok cool, thanks for the reply :)

So the last thing that's really bothering me, why does Coretemp show a fluctuation in frequency but not CPU-Z??
