i installed it yesterday to replace my 8800gt but im having some problems
the card makes a strange sound when a game is running & i dont think its the fan, im getting random stuttering in a few games & oblivion actually ran better on my old 8800gt

i have all the latest drivers and everything is at stock speeds

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
ATI 4870 X2
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX
Abit IP35
Corsair HX 620W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

here are 2 videos of 3D mark, it has some really bad glitching going on, has anyone else had this problem?

If the strange sound is a squealing, mine does that.

Did you fully remove the Nvidia drivers before installing the new card?

yep, i removed them with drive sweeper, the squealing seems to stop as the games stutter, and in oblivion it sort of ticks on and off as the hours pass when i rest

mine makes a noise when under load also its defo not fan as mine is under water.

My 8800 Ultra did the same just not as loud.

I had that sort of corruption in Vantage on my Powercolour 4870x2 and general stuttering/bad frame rates in most games. I ended up swapping for a Sapphire 4870x2 and most of the corruption seems to have gone in Vantage.

I occasionally get the squealing noise as well, but I haven't noticed it in any other game apart from Crysis Warhead.

I have not heard the squealing sound on mines myself and also the high temperatures that people claim these output, highest I have seen mines is in the 60s.

mine is the powercolour too so that could explain it

well i opened up the case and tightened the screws a bit, the card didnt seem to go in any tighter tho

having said that i think it did something because the graphics were fine in 3Dmark and i managed to complete the test with no problems

my score was

3DMark Score
P11056
CPU Score
8754
Graphics Score
12119

im not sure if this is normal for my spec? i didnt change any of the settings and im running vista64 ultimate if it matters

i could still hear the squealing altho it sounds more like hissing on mine :p

overclock your q6600 to at least 3.2 PLEASE, youll be CPU limited in a lot of games at stock speeds so you wont be making full use of your 4870x2!

i tried overclocking it to 3gig when i got it but it made my system unstable, i was getting bsod when i tried to encode movies and things, maybe i did something wrong tho? any ideas what i might have done wrong mate?

Hi guys,

Sorry to hijack the thread (hopefully), but I've also got a bit of a weird occurance with my Powercolour 4870x2.
Everynow and then I get a blue line running across the screen. It normally does it a few cm down from the top of the screen. The line is 1pixel high but runs the entire width of the screen.
It does this on the desktop in Vista, and also sometimes in CSS when I view the scores table.
Temps are fine and I can't see any other graphical anomolies.

I'm using 8.10 but without CCC (was told it's not required as I have Rivatuner for fan control). (my first ATI card, so I've little idea what I'm doing :D)

Anyone else had this or similar?
So far most of the issues i've read about with the 4870x2 seem to be coming from Powercolour cards :(

Langlest -- try finding an overclocking guide for your motherboard (if you haven't already) and make sure that certain CPU options in the BIOS are disabled. I had an issue with my overclock, until i realised that I'd forgotten to disabled the thermal management in BIOS (I'd get unknown BSOD, and in EventViewer it would say that Performance Power Management couldn't be initialised, so it BSOD-ed :()

thanks for the tip :) ill look into it and check those settings, i dont have that problem that you are having but it seems like powercolour are making dodgy cards, i might rma mine and get another brand but ill give it a few days first because its a lot better since i tightened the screws

I get the squealing during the intro logos in Stalker. Apparently the doodads responsible for regulating voltage make this noise when they are having to do more work, ie when the card is in 3D mode but doing very light work.

So if it stops when the game stutters, that's possibly your GPU getting maxed out and calling for more volts.

Hopefully an electrical engineer reads this thread and corrects me if this is rubbish. ;)

Finally found what was causing this.
Going into CCC, I started fiddling with various settings, to see what happened.
Eventually I found that "Reduce DVI Frequency on high-resolution displays" stopped the blue lines appearing :)

Yay :D

If anyone else has this problem, try that first.
