Im in an awkward position

I’ve owned the core parts of the system in my signature for years. I managed to get my Q6600 G0 to 3.4GHz on air fairly easily, so I think I managed to get a good chip. The limiting factor in my overclock was my mobo. The Abit IP35 Pro's PWM sensor heats up to so much, that I placed additional fans over it to bring the temps down. This has been a widely known problem since these boards were released.

My main problem is that the IP35 under load creates some sort of noise in the system that is emitted by the motherboard and through the sound card. A quick search in Google shows I wasn’t alone with this problem. It sounds like a high pitch bleep every time I move the mouse or the CPU has to work. A sort of harsh digital noise is also emitted which both are driving me nuts.

At first it was very quiet, and over the years as I’ve added more hard drives, thus putting a bigger strain on the motherboard the noise has increased. I’ve also avoided the problem for awhile by using a separate sound card, as the onboard card is worse.

Right now I’m not sure what I should do, as I want to sort this out. With new Intel Chips coming soon, and the fact that I already have a relatively good CPU already, I am reluctant to buy a new i5/i7 system. Money is also tight.

Is it worth paying £90 for a good P45 board and try to get the overclock a little higher, with the risk that I might not be able to reach 3.4 again. Or save up for a new system. If I go down the motherboard replacement route, as I have a Tuniq Tower 120 CPU tower, how easily are they to swap boards? I remember putting the back plate on thinking this would never be used on another board, due to its adhesive surface.

Any input is greatly appreciated

you have an excellent system in your sig.

Buying a new motherboard sounds very sensible.

cant help on the backplate question much.

Just get a 2nd hand p35/p45 mobo for ¬30-40quid mate and you'll be fine, not worth buying new p45 chipsets right now, you'd be better off putting new AM3 setup for same money.

If you say that the Q6600 does for you what you want it to - which I'm not suprised as they're still very good chips with lots of juice in them I'd just go with 2nd hand p35/p45.

Even if the new board won't OC that high, say 3.2 instead of 3.4, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between 200mhz OC anyways, unless all you do is running benchmarks all day ; ).

Ah and regarding the Tuniq, it depends if you've used the sticky plate to stick it onto MB or not, if you havnt, then it's 40seconds job ( unscrew mobo, take cooler off, take out cpu, swap to new board, put board back in ) - HOWEVER, if you've used the supplied sticker to stick the backplate into the mobo, it will take some fiddling to take it off if I remember well, but I guess since your current mobo is screwed anyways you can always exhaust your rage and break it in half while taking it off haha.

I have the same cooler on my system and when I changed motherboards it was an absolute PITA to get the backplate off. Not sure of what to suggest to make it easier but I nearly broke my motherboard getting it off.

This TBH, my mate bought a second hand p35 board for about 20 quid, a vanilla Asus P5K cant remember the exact model, but it was the basic P5K...

We cranked a mid range core2 right up to 2.9ghz in about 20 mins, runs solid as a rock, and thats with decent temps on a stock intel cooler. The p35's are good boards.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will probably stick with the Q6600 then. Just really worried about moving the cooler to another board. I suppose as long as it comes off my IP35 and is in adequate condition for the 2nd, I will be fine. Just dont want to damage the newer mobo

Were you able to use the baseplate and tuniq tower again?

With regards to purchasing 2nd hand. Where do you guys think best? I’ve always brought components brand new.

Yeah I was able to use it again (using it in my current system). Can you configure your trust account so I can send you an email.

Just a quick update, I managed to get a 2nd hand Asus P5Q Pro Turbo for £40. So far it looks a good board. Used some new artic mx-3 with my tuniq tower and dropped the temps. Nearly snapped my old board in two trying to get the tuniq's backplate off :)

Many thanks for the suggestions
