I'm in severe danger of upgrading soon, advice needed

What path to follow?

I have no bias for Intel or AMD, I really don't do such tribal stuff, I just go where the performance leads me. On same token the price per performance issue is not a problem here either, its well overdue my current upgrade cycle (apart from GPU).

To clarify I am a high end PC Flight Simmer, and really do need performance parts, don't really keep tabs on things these days and could use some advice on my new upgrade path ... goes without saying I'll be buying here from OC/UK again, they have never let me down in the past.

My current specs are ...

Case? cant remember, but its high quality and gigantic, with fold out tempered glass window, not that I look into it or anything as I'm not interested in RGB bling, but it will probably last me the rest of my life, one of the things upgraders skimp on are cases, no such issue here .. a good case is the very foundation of a good PC build and future ones :)

Moving on: Currently own a 24GB RTX 3090 and have no intention of buying a 4090, skipped the 2080 series and will upgrade to the inevitable 5xxx series once they are out.

My PSU could do with an upgrade as my current 1000W one is easily past its 5 year warranty, Thermaltake one?, also aware PSU's are getting a new ATX 3.0 standard, so it makes sense to get one of these to last me another 5 years plus for insurance and longevity.

What I do need to upgrade is a new high performance CPU for flight sim and of course a good Motherboard to suit it, DDR5 decent speed ram and 64GB of it ... and before anyone types and says that's OTT, its not really, not for what I do. To qualify that statement, I was one of the early MS2020 Beta testers and we had to send them a PC diagnostic report to be eligible ... and it soon became clear you needed at least 32 GB ram to qualify ... of course now that the sim is released and tweaked you can get away with less .. but you really shouldn't ... also and in some DCS scenarios and maps I've seen the sim burst the 32GB limit a few times before it pages to disk usage ... the next step up from 32GB is 64GB, you cant buy 33GB after all :), so yes ... Indeed 64GB is what I need and of course now it has to be DDR5, thats OK as I will be buying a new performance motherboard too.

I'm fine for disk storage space, no issues there, wont be overclocking anything either.

I'll need a new CPU cooler, AIO stuff is fine here, will not be going down the complex path of dedicated water cooling, but anything suitable and powerful will fit into my case with ease.
What I need is a new high quality PSU ... preferably ATX 3.0 standard.

New CPU .. currently use an AMD 5950X.

New ram, DDR5 high spec and speed of 64GB stuff.

High quality Motherboard to suit above, not over worried about brands, but always had good luck with Asus.

And finally a good quality performance AIO in case cooler for the CPU.

Any recommendations are welcome, thanks.

Yep, seriously considering the AMD new X3D series, perhaps the 12 core 7900 X3D CPU. Should have mentioned it might a month or so before I buy though.

Also and honestly a bit out of touch with AMD vs Intel stuff ... we'll see :)

Thanks.

I would defo wait for the X3D given how much of a difference the 5800X3D made to MSFS, in fact I would be tempted to swap that 5950X for that right now and then see if that is enough for you given its uplift.

Well I've been told a 7900X3D or 7950X3D is an appreciable difference over my current 5950X CPU and MS FS2020 is CPU bound as are other Flight Sims, but thanks will consider your advice, was more looking to see who was ahead CPU wise at this time or very near time, Intel or AMD, have no bias for either factorys.

Flight Sim aside, then right now the 13900KS is the fastest CPU, but from the benches I've seen, AMD & Intel are both very close with a 4090, so if someone asked me to help choose between a 7700X or 13700K (for gaming), I'd say flip a coin. You really need 1080p to see much difference between modern CPUs, as even a 4090 tends to be the bottleneck at 4K. If the X3D CPUs don't show a large bump in gaming performance then I don't think I'd bother upgrading yet, if I were you.

What do you mean by "Flight Sim aside" ?
Is a 13900KS no good for flight sims ?
I'm considering one and do play MSFS at 1440 with a 3080ti.

I meant, my comments were just "this is how I see a general summary of Intel and AMD gaming performance". From my not very informed impression of Flight Sim, you can't necessarily apply generic summaries, because simulators like this can be unique in what they need and benefit from.

For example: if we talk in general terms, then the 13900KS is really a waste of money because a 7700X or 13700K can do the same job in the vast majority of games (in this review, @ 1440p, it puts the 13900KS and 7700X with a 4090, within 1.5% average FPS across 12 games), but can it make a substantial difference specifically in Flight Sim? I don't know.

Would wait till the end of the month when the new X3D cpus release.

You would probably get more fps with one of the new cards using frame gen over a CPU upgrade in flight sim.

FS2022 is heavily CPU bound, plus I prefer to skip a gen for GPU's for lots of reasaons if I can, skipped RTX 2xxx series for this RTX 3090 and so on before it.
Will hang on until the new AMD X3D's come out for CPU's or and see what some of the hardcore simmers think, AMD or Intel latest gen ... Or just wait another year maybe, performance in all sims aint that bad at all really, its a want more than a need ... an itch to scratch, but always enjoy noticable performance increases.

Thanks
