Just had a plumber come and replace our fan on the combi boiler.

£168.87.

The part was £82 online, and he was here for 12 mins, including writing the cheque out for him

It's time to do some research before asking someone to do an expensive activity on your behalf rather.

You either mean that I should have done it myself (which I asked about on here and was told not to) or that I should have shopped about, which I did.

Cheapest quote was £130 cash in hand but no paper work. This guy was the next cheapest. The manufacturer quoted £180 for it.

If he was only a plumber then he shouldn't have done it.
A Combi Boiler requires a Corgi registered Gasman.
I know because I've got one standing next to me.

To me a plumber includes gas men, at least around here it does. There isn't a single plumber in my local area that is not corgi registered!

Oh, and ask your friend if he wants an apprentice

I looked in to it a year ago, but got a mortgage and a wedding to save for so getting a poorly paid apprenticeship isn't an option. Going to look at night school maybe, or a weekend job learning the trade.

My dad is/was a corgi reg plumber and hasn't bothered renewing as he is about to retire. However, one of the guys who used to work for me has set up on his own, still doing the odd bit of work for us.

He works very hard, starts at 6 in the morning on sites on a four day week - never home before 7 in the evening, and does a cash in hand central heating job Fri/Sat - him and his mate can do most houses in a day and a half to 2 days. He earns 85 - 90k per annum and just has the half costs of a van to run out of that. Never advertises - lives off recomendations

Earning that would be great, however an apprentice on minimum wage will struggle with my bills
