Hi,

I have a oldish computer, and im looking to upgrade.

The types of games i playing are : Racing, Shooters, FPS just to name a few.

Games i play, Batman Arkham City, Crysis 1/2, Test drive 2, Dirt 3, Minecraft.

Programs i mainly run: Steam, Video Conversions (Blu Ray) (MKV's) (Divx Converter).

I am really stuck on what to buy as i would like to upgrade my whole rig and start from scratch. I built my current computer back in 2005, and it has lasted until now, playing almost every game on medium to high settings. (In the signature of my profile is my current setup).

Before i start figuring out what components to buy, i would like to know which is better Intel or AMD.

And i know that will spark a whole debate, but looking at what games i play, and what i do mainly whilst i am at the computer hopefully you guys can help me make a choice on what to buy.

I have looked at Intel boards and Processors, and for me personally they are overpriced compared to AMD boards and Processors. So i am slightly leaning towards AMD for my new rig.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Jonathan

budget?

and stay away from amd at the moment. they're just simply not competitive with intel at the mid to high end range.

780 for a rig with a better case and ssd

Don't think he clarified very well but currently he is looking at getting some new parts rather than the "whole" build

- New case: pretty much fixed on the CM storm trooper.
- Motherboard/CPU: Z77 board, at the moment he likes the look of the Asus P8Z77 Pro which is what I have, But most tend to sway towards gigabyte + i5 3570K
- RAM - any decent ram like the Samsung green possibly?
- PSU - 5/600 Watts, whatever you think is best, I personally go for more watts than the system needs as electric bills aren't important and they don't get put under so much load so tend to last longer

He has CD/DVD Drive, HDD's, Scythe CPU Cooler and the 6850 does him fine same as me, Minecraft runs fine and so do many high end games :)

160 quid mobo off a 600 quid budget is kinda retarded imo, but whatever ;p
500w psu is fine for a single gpu rig.
what ram you use dont make much of a real world difference, more for epeen and benchmarking. i'd get a set of cheap ram and spend the money elsewhere like on the gpu/ssd instead

I've explained this but in some areas the board may become useful in the future, LAN Parties are a common occurrence so wireless may come in handy, as well as the extra USB ports, also another GPU may be needed where the x8 x8 lanes will be needed. Extra SATA ports are a must, 6 at a minimum due to the HDD's being used. Lets not forget this is an UPGRADE, not a complete new build.

That's very true, I have also explained this, and that 8GB is plenty for his use.

EDIT: I am also extremely picky when it comes to builds colour schemes, this build was supposed to follow a red/black scheme but there are no ATX boards with this colour scheme that I can find that are Z77 =/

My current basket for him, Undecided on the PSU/Motherboard, and whether or not there is a need for a new CPU cooler, also the addition of an SSD might be needed.
