Hello there.

Im moving ISP's from AOL (which have been fine since 1998 untill now), to BT.
Reason being, i saw a AOL talk deal which was supposed to just completely free make my telephone calls free over AOL... so i thaught okay what the heck ill go for it... But today i found out that theyd changed me from My 8mbps unlimited pack to some verbal diarrhea 8mbps witha 40 gig a month limit with phonecalls which costs more than i started with, so i give them a bell and said i wanted to go back to what i had befor and they said they cant change anything for 48 hours so i thaught okay what the heck dude...

So i went onto BT broadband website, and they have a 8mbps unlimited plus free eavening and weekend calls deal for 24.99 per month, so i got my MAC code that the website told me to get from my AOL and i enterd it and iv signed up for BT Broadband and it should be on in 7 days....

So does this mean that it will automatically cancel my aol stuff?
Or do i have to give aol a ring and say iv enterd my MAC code for another ISP and iv gone to them, and i want to cancel all my stuff etc?

Also, when my BT Comes on do i just enter my BT Email adress [email protected] plus my password to get my router to connect to the internet?

Also, on BT Broadband does any one know if when you reboot your router your IP changes, because mine changes every time i reboot my router on AOL which is good.

Thanks

Why BT? They traffic shape like there's no tomorrow, especially if you intend to download 40GB+/month.

With Home Hub all I needed to do was plug in ethernet cable.
IP changes when reboot router, unless you bought static IP.

hmm, bt home hub thats the thing with the telephone it comes with right? what if i want to use my netgear router still? do i just enter my @btinternet.com thing and password to log onto them?

allso is my old internet canceld now iv given bt my mac code etc?

Exactly. Call BT and cancel the migration and then create a new thread on here asking where to go. Which predictable will end up with Be/o2 if you are in their LLU area if not A Enta reseller such as UKFSN, ADSL24 and Aquiss. Zen will also get a mention too. (This isn't a bad thing though. These are currently the best internet providers in the country.)

migration codes, i still dont 100% get how they work, you just enter them and then your internets swapped to another broadband? so if i dont like bt a month or two down the line i could just get a mac code and swap to somthing else again? and when i do enter the mac code my old internet is just gone like that, and i dont have to fart about trying to cancel it etc?

No, you are stuck with them for 18 months. You have to leave now or new year 2010. (Unless distant selling act covers internet access?)

Migrations take 7 days to take place. BTW will notify the leaving ISP of your departure.

btw this is the BT deal iv went for http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=15764

not that im going to be using the hub or the wireless tho.

That was the option I was on before migrating.
It really is unlimited, they don't mind how much you download. They just prevent you downloading during peak hours.

If you don't mind speeds of ~50kB/s from 4pm-1am, then BT is ok. Some people say 6pm-11.30pm but for me it was 4pm-1am. If you YouTube/iPlayer, it’s more or less impossible during these times. Gaming ping was good, on my favourite cod4 server, I had 40ms on BT and on O2 I have 50ms.

18 months is a long time... Make the right choice now.

but it just feels slow, it only downloads at about 700kb/s ish average.
what gets me most tho is there crap custemor service.

what would be a better isp to go for over bt then?
i thaught bt was good tho, i mean the are afterall british telecom not bloody american like aol lol

can i cancel bt once i have it tho? cause if i just go to the bank surely i can just cancel it cause if they arent getting money then there not going to leave the internet on are they? lol

Is that 700KB/s (KiloBytes) or 700Kb (Kilobits). The former is correct for that speed test (more or less, 800 or so would be ideal).

As said Entanet would be the best bet. They really do run a excellent network. 1 month contracts add confidence too. I personally am with Aquiss who like UKFSN and ADSL24 resell Entanet based connections and find them faultless.

If you have Be in your area they will be the obvious choice.

That depends if internet access comes under the DSA (someone in the know such as Tolien), if yes you have a few days to tell them you want to leave after you are connected but being BT they will probably not do anything and you will be stuck. If you cancel your DD then they will just move to debt collectors.

700kB/s is good for 8 meg.
You expect BT to have better custemor service?
Most people here recomend Be/o2 or any Enta Resellers.
If you cancel the contract early, you'll have to pay the remaining months. (over £400?)

sorry for bringing back my old thread.

But i decided not to cancel my move to BT and so far its bloody brilliant.
No more packetloss on american Teamspeak servers which used to varie from 5% to 80% loss on TS on AOL.

when i start downloads now on BT the speed is about 1.8mb/s download rate then steadys out to about a constant 900kb/s when downloading (which is about a ful 7meg out of my 8meg connection)

heres my speed test results on aol and bt, befor and after :)

Now you may think, barely any difference but iv still got 3 days befor the internet is "bedded in" apparently says BT in a email so i could possibly get a few more kb/s of speed.
Allso for the small speed increase and a smaller monthly bill its fixed my packet loss problems, and downloads are more consistent they dont download at 1mb/s to start off then drop to about 200kb/s which is 2meg kind of speeds which used to happen on aol

so im quite happy :) plus my ip's changed a lot and thank god its still not a static one, and when i run servers and stuff on games its smoother now :)

iv just ran speed test another 3 times and got 100% exact same results to the same killobite, if that isnt consistent i dont know what is :)
