Hey guys...

Been a reader on the OcUK forums for a few years now at least, but never really posted much. I've always wanted to take photography seriously, but never had the time or money to dedicate to it till now.

I purchased quite an odd DSLR (more on which in a bit) around May 2007, just after finishing uni, when I came into some money. However, with looking for a job, and a whole bunch of other stuff - the last half of 2007 proved a very busy time; and I hardly got to use it.

I'm finally settled now, and one of my main goals in 2008 is to get out there and take some photos. I'm approaching photography with no preconceptions, I want to just see what kind of pictures I like taking, and then go from there.

The camera I have is an Olympus E-330, with the standard 14-45mm kit lens. I managed to score it for £230 brand new from an independent photography shop, due to a pricing error on their behalf.

I've only been really using it for a week or two now, and I've been experimenting with taking a few random pics and processing them (trying not to over process, just touch a few things up...)

So here goes; this is what I've managed since last week. Let the critiqué begin:

1. Had to try one of these very cliché light trails... my apologies..

3. I find it interesting cropping pictures, to adjust how the subject is framed.

4. Was struggling to get a consistent exposure across this shot on the camera. Tweaked levels and de saturated.

5. This was a spur of the moment shot of an over-excited squirrel. Never taken any photos of animals before, I don't like the soft focus.

6. Was mucking about taking to see how the sky looked after I bought a UV filter.

7. I like this one, except for the bottom left of the frame.

6 is the best of the bunch there.

I'm a fan of offering improvements with critique so don't take this negatively. On the first one, I'm not a great fan of the angle, with the tree obstructing composition it's a bit hit and miss, the b&w could do with a contrast boost as well to make it stand out more. On the 2nd the blue isn't right for me, and I can't see it as anything more than a snapshot pretending to be artsyfartsy akin to the 3rd, which the branches in the top left detract.

I like number 4, good subject matter, shame about the tree, the squirrel shot is as you say pretty spur of the moment which looks good and the london eye one would have benefitted from using the rule of thirds. Overall, you've got an eye which I can definitely see improving in the year to come, hope you enjoy it and can understand where I'm coming from in my comments.

Oh & Welcome :)

Hey guys. Thanks for looking!!

I agree with most things you say Tom, I appreciate your comments. I have my jpegs open next to the versions Imageshack has resized for me (used in this thread) and the colours are definitely less saturated.

I might go try and re-crop 7 with the horizon a bit higher...

For what its worth I'm new here as well, but I do like the idea of the first shot, even if it hasn't quite come to fruition.

6 is awesome, love the light at the bottom of Ben.

Very nice pictures mate!

3, you were talking about cropping pictures, I would have personally cropped the picture enough so that branch was out of view in the top left hand corner.
