Hi there.

I'm going to be getting my new PC on Wednesday, and for the first time ever, I'm going to try and have a go at Overclocking :)

This is what I'm going to be buying:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Tenth Anniversary Dual
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
Corsair HX 620W

Your going to have to be slow with me here :) I'm not the most savvy computer person... So firstly, will the above components be OK for Overclocking?

Now, as I won't be actually Overclocking anything until Wednesday, I thought I'd try and learn as much as possible about Overclocking before I come to actually doing it. Hence the purpose of this thread.

I have read a few 'Overclocking Guides', lot's of threads by different people who are new to Overclocking etc but the thing I came across is that people are saying different things to what the guides say and it's making me confused...

For example, on the Overclockers main website, it says that the Memory Timings for the 2GB Tenth Anniversary RAM is 3-3-3-12. But in a thread I read somewhere, the timings are rated to 533 and 3,3,3,8 Timings?!

Does this mean that the above RAM is 530Mhz and extraction to 1:1 operation?

Because at the beggining of one of the guides, it says to input the 'DRAM Timing' manually in the BIOS and I don't want to put something in that is wrong and completely destory my new PC...

Are there any guides out there which takes you through a step by step guide of how to Overclock for the complete dummy like me? :)

I'll keep reading through the guides I have printed off and if I get stuck I'll ask for some help in here.

Again I've read that you need to do some calculations for FSB? And if I'm using the E6300 CPU, my default Multiplyer will be 7? But why do I need to multiply 333 by 7 to get 2331?

Anyway, any simple tips you might have will be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards
-Rob

i'm a n00b too, i'm up to 2.1 so far, first of all, go into the bios and then 'pc health' and turn off (disable) fan control, this will make your heatsink fan go at full speed.

Yep, that all looks good!

Because at the beggining of one of the guides, it says to input the 'DRAM Timing' manually in the BIOS and I don't want to put something in that is wrong and completely destory my new PC...

You can't destroy anything by putting RAM timings in wrong - the worst that will happen is that you'll have to clear them and start again. In the case of the 8 vs. 12 question - both will likely work, and the difference in performance will be virtually nil. That timing is the least important of them all and lower isn't always better.

Again I've read that you need to do some calculations for FSB? And if I'm using the E6300 CPU, my default Multiplyer will be 7? But why do I need to multiply 333 by 7 to get 2331?

Your default FSB will be 266 and your default multi 7 - 266x7 = ~1866Mhz. If you wanted to overclock the CPU to 2331, which should be pretty easy to do, you'd need to increase the FSB to 333. Your RAM would be fine with this as it would then be running at its rated speed.

my default multiplier seems to be 6 on a DS3, when i do the maths it doesn't add up right, my FSB is currently 286, so this multiplied by 6 should give 1716, however, it's appearing as 2002, in windows, but 1716 in TAT, whats the deal?

Ok, thank you very much for the replies

Hopefully it shouldn't be too long now until I can buy my PC.. Just waiting to get payed :)

So if I run into any problems Overclocking I will post them in here

Thank you very much

Got pretty much the same setup as you mate, expect atleast 3.2Ghz and upto 3.5Ghz+

Disable anything you dont need in the bios.

Set voltages to the following -

CPU 1.400v
Mem + 0.4v
FSB + 0.2v
MCH + 0.2v.

Also press ctrl and f1 to enable advanced options in the bios.

Set memory timings to 4-4-4-12.

Try firstly for 457FSb which will give you 3.2Ghz, work your way up from there.

Thanks for the help VTR!

Ok, so I'm going to do my first Overclock.. Should I put in the exact settings which you have told me to do above in the BIOS on my first ever Overclock?

So for my first Overclock, I will disable anything I don't need and enter these settings straight away:

CPU 1.400v
Mem + 0.4v
FSB + 0.2v
MCH + 0.2v.

Then run some tests to see if it's stabe? Or should I try lower settings to the ones you suggested and then work my way up?

In one of the guides I'm reading, it says to turn off a few things in BIOS so it will help Overclock better... Once I've finished Overclocking, should I change all the settings back to what they were originally?

Sorry to ask such simple questions but I never done anything like this before and I want to make sure I get everything right

Thanks again

Please tell me you've done your required reading before going for a jog around the BIOS?

It will save you such a large amount of grief in the long run that by itself alone it is worht it. ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE NOT ONE TO NORMALLY GET FRIENDLY WITH A POOTER.

comedy lol

the bios has scary things in it, don't touch what you don't know, before you start, read up on how to reset your bios, google "clearing the cmos on a ____" where ____ is your board's name

Ok cool

I have a week or so to get all knowledged up about BIOS etc so I will have a good read like

Cheers for the continuing advice

Right, to save me a bit of dosh, I'm going to buy the GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800Mhz RAM instead of the Tenth Anniversary...

So for my first ever Overclock, I'm going to put these settings in first:

CPU 1.400v
Mem + 0.3v
FSB + 0.2v
MCH + 0.2v

And my timings will be 4-4-4-12

Will these settings reach 3.0Ghz on my first Overclock after I've done a stability test as well?

As you can see I'm new to Overclocking so please exscuse me if I across as a bit 'dumb' when it comes to Overclocking :)

Thanks for the help

Kind regards,
-Rob.

Yes mate those settings will be fine, you may be able to reach your target with lower voltages though. It's trial and error really but they will be a good starting point.

I'd recommend the Crucial RAM if possible though, it's really good memory!

Hi there

I finally got my new PC! Yay!

Now I'm going to overclock for the first time. I want to make sure that when I start I'm going to be starting correctly etc...

This is my current setup as of now:

Gigabyte DS3
Intel Core 2 DUO E4300
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

I'm following the Gigabyte DS3 Overclocking guide and these are setting I'm going to put in first for my first overclock:

VCore - 1.45V
Memory - +0.3V
Mem Timings - 4-4-4-12
Chipset Voltage - +0.1V
Memory Multiplyer - 2.0
FSB - 300

If these settings are ok after I've run a few tests, what do I have to increase next to get a higher overclock? Do I just have to increase the FSB by 5 everytime or is there something else to?

I'll post screenshots of my progress once you guys have comfirmed everything above is ok just so you can make sure I'm not doing anything wrong...

Thanks for the help

Kind regards,
-Rob
