I have a HP Omen 32" display which will run at 2k res (2560 x 1440)
Connections available on the back of the monitor are 2 x HDMI and 1 x DP
I have no DP cable so we can ignore that for the sake of this thread.

In the PC I am typing this on at present I am running a GTX580, my connectivity options are 2 x dual link DVI or mini HDMI.

Cables I have are a dual link DVI > HDMI, or mini HDMI > HDMI

I cannot get the PC to recognise a higher resolution than 1920 x 1200, if I use nvidia control panel to force it, it doesn't display correctly.

HOWEVER, I have tried a GTX680 in this machine with both a straight HDMI cable and this very same dual link DVI > HDMI and it displays at 2560 x 1440 @ 75hz with no problems.

I have tried a clean install of the latest gfx drivers for the GTX580 and still no joy.

What is going on ?

I had the same problem on a different GEforce card (N210) - couldn't get more than 2048x1152. If I went into the NVIDIA control panel I could set a custom resolution of 2560x1440, but had to set a lower frequency - it was high res, but looked poor.

However, I then discovered that changing the 'timing' from automatic to GTF solved it. - I now have beautiful 2560x1440 at 60Hz - it looks fantastic - using a lowish cost (but 1.4) HDMI cable on a low cost NVIDIA card - don't let anyone tell you that you will need to use the display port or dual DVI outputs

It took me a while to sort it, but now finally enjoying the full benefits of my Dell U2515H

I quoted this from a post I found on nvidia forum that might help you.
