I'm Puzzled

Here are my specs before i rant:

P4 640 @ 3.2GHZ
Fatal1ty FP-IN9
2GB OCZ Dual Channel mem
8800GT
viewsonic 17" CRT

I built it all this morning and turned it on and all my case fans, the motherboard LED's and the graphics card fans all start going. Which means they're working, am i right?

And i go to plug my monitor in using the adapter and as soon as the CRT cable hits the adapter the monitor just goes into standby and won't come on while the adapter is there

Then i plugged it into the graphics card and it still was in standby :mad:

And my case speaker is plugged in too but i've heard no error beeps so i don't think the graphics card is at fault

Please help D= and don't shout at me for rucks of text and my n00bishness

I mean the VGA to DVI adaptor

& Yep all the cable are in the right places and secure

Everything is plugged in well but i used the P4 connector because Prescotts only need P4 don't they?

But i just tried that and still doesn't work

Could it be something to do with the CRT not being compatible with the 8800 or something?

Any post peeps may come form the speaker attached to the motherboard header and
not attached speakers through the on board sound.

i tried with one stick and just a 160GB HD but still doesnt work and im getting no beeps

And tbh, i can't hear the harddrive or anything over the roar of the 8800 lol

The problem stems from the adapter I believe- if you are converting a DVI->VGA at one end but keep it as VGA on the monitor, the 8800 series don't like it.

My solution was to go out and buy a new high-quality DVI->DVI cable. Set me back around £40.00 from a well known high-street retailer. No names of competitors here, but you can find the cables anywhere . Something to do with the monitor not picking up a digital signal from the 8800 series (obviously) due to the fact you're using an analogue cable.

Edit: Also, the 8800GTX (not sure about the GT, but I assume so) has 2x DVI ports on the back. Try the adapter in both. I've heard reports off people on various computing Forums about the card somehow trying to output through only one as a 'primary', and regarding the other as a 'secondary'. Don't know how much of that is technically true... just clutching at straws here.

How about if i just bought a LCD with a digital input? Would that solve things?
