My Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8Ghz has reported temps of... *gulp* 85-90C with SpeedFan 4.31... on partial load, so something seems SERIOUSLY amiss. To check this isn't done horrible trick SpeedFan is playing on me, what other programs are there and also, I've heard that at this temp the processors literally start to melt... Should I panic?

Thanks.

What does the temperature say in bios?

If the Bios is high - I would check to see if the fan is working on cpu cooler and see if it's holding good contact onto the cpu - also check to see dust build-up on heatsink and fan.

If I remember rightly, P4 chips are known to run fine at eye openingly high temperatures. What temp are you idling at? What does the bios say?

temps of 85-90 c would definitely push my panic button too
everest and motherboard monitor both have CPU temps in them also you may wish to try real temp i believe that one only works with Intel CPU's

what id be doing now is removing my HSF cleaning and replacing the thermal compound as well as throughly cleaning the HSF possibly looking for replacement and see if that brings the temps down

At those kind of levels it is probably throttling anyway.

Bear in mind that some boards can report wildly inaccurate temperatures. My old BD7-II mobo was notorious for this, the system (yes, you heard, system, not cpu core) temp was allegedly 82C(!!) while running prime for a while.

Yea depending on revision Prescotts can run very hot but 85C lightly loaded is wayy too high. Check fan for dust and heatsink seating, thermal compound etc.. Is this a S478 system? i'd honestly get a Northwood 2.8 or something and flog the preschot if you wanna keep it for awhile. I just 'downgraded' (not really ;) ) two Easynote H5 laptops with Prescott Mobile 3.2 533FSB cpus in them to northwood 3.06 Mobile cpus. both had major overheating issues (80c+ loaded) and went into thermal shutoff quite a lot, also battery life was 1 1/2 hours at best and thats with speedstep enabled so the cpu was really at 1.86Ghz a lot, Northwoods actually a little faster and no thermal shutdowns, low to mid 60s loaded and 2hrs+ battery life now.

It's throttling all right, and the BIOS says the same.

E2160 it is then!

Thanks guys!

Before you splash the cash why not see if you can "fix" your current heat problem. I would remove the heatsink to clean it and then reseat it with some new thermal paste. Also check the case and CPU fans are not working. Often by cleaning a dirty heatsink you can knock 5C to 10C of your tempractures and if the thermal paste was previously incorrectly applied can add another 10c onto the tempratures.

However if this is just an excuse for the wife, partner... to buy a new CPU etc then ingnore my advise and go ahead.

Well, you have no idea how much dust was clogged up in the heatsink, I'm surprised the fan was spinning at all. Now it's averaging at 72-73C. To be honest, I was going to get a E2160 anyway, I just feared that my CPU might melt in the meantime, and I believe the motherboard is C2D compatible. Asrock Conroe 945g-DVI something something?

LOL they don't melt at that temp worse that can happen is it will shut itself down.

What's your budget? maybe we can suggest something a bit better?

I had the same thing goin on with mine, and after removing a candy floss size ball of fluff it was ok and still is its in my daughters room

My P4 Prescott 3.4ghz is much worse, being at the higher end of the scale. It used to report 90C idle in BIOS until i ignored it. Still running fine after 2 years.

my p4 prescott @ 3ghz only runs at 39'c or 45'c under load :)
does any1 know how much wattage this cpu consumes?... its a HT if that makes a difference

Better than an E2160?

Well I was planning on getting a new motherboard soon too, and overclocking that C2D. Budget overall? Well, motherboard, RAM, CPU cooler and CPU would be possibly around £150? Perhaps slightly more.

P4's are crazy hot, but amazing how they cope with the heat.. My P4 3Ghz cpu at work in a SFF case reaches 75-80 degrees regularly, and I have had it on 24x7 for the last year or so now..

knew wthe P4's ran hot, but those temps are now unheard of unless HSF is seated incorrectly, even then these temps wouldn't appear. no wander we have global warming with chips like that

My work machine was virus scanning the other week usually i can continue to work whilst it runs in the background, on this occasion is started to run dog slow so when i rebooted and had a look in the bios the temp was 92 !! this was an old pentium 478 chip, very impressive how they work at these temps
