...and I'm not sure I'll be coming back.

First off I still have the 'no internet' problem, and secondly my PC is single-handedly inflating our electricity bill to the extreme and that's when it's just doing bugger all, nevermind folding.

It was fun while it lasted, but I'm not sure I'll be playing a very big part in future, maybe get it 20/25% when I eventually get some net access...

I'd expect a PC to be using less than 50p/day. I have an advantage in that none of the rate rises have 'hit' yet. I'm expecting a huge hike next year though, at which point I'll be reassessing priorities as my finances are tight and I can't justify huge amounts just for DC use while I'm also trying to pay off debts.

The difference in electricity used between the machine at idle (though not at standby) and the machine at full load can't be that great surely?

Obviously running anything 24/7 will greatly affect electricity used but I wouldn't have thought that running at 100% for the time the machine is on anyway would have any noticeable effect. I could be wrong of course.

If you want a dial up modem - I'm sure I've got one somewere

Thanks for the offer but the main reason we don't have any yet is there isn't even a phone line at the house yet, and I need to get my cheapskate housemates to cough up £125 to get BT to install one.

Electricity included in my uni accomodation bill! Everyone send your spare hardware to me and I'll run it for you

That was fine last year, but being in an 8 person house where people are quite uptight over electricity usage and im currently the only one with a PC being used at all is hampering me quite a bit :p Especially as we're already looking at £50 a month at least with only 5 of us moved in and no one using PCs due to no internet

low energy light bulbs (take them with you when you leave) and wooly jumpers (turn heating off in day time if electric) group cooking (minimise oven use and get social) - electric showers eat power so 5 mins max (or use the uni's / gyms). Secondary glazing on windows (the plastic, shrink with a hair dryer stuff) so many ways to cut house bills.

hehe, I know a few people who sware by using the gyms showers every day, good move!

Seriously though if you have any rigs just for folding that you're thinking of shutting down due to electricity costs then send em to me and I'll run them in your name :)
