i think its about time to go for a quad core cpu, i know its going to mean a new motherboard and ram too but i dont know what i should go for? any suggestions on what would give me a nice peformance increase from what i have at the moment?

here is my current system

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600
HIS iCooler V ATI Radeon HD 5850
Corsair Dominator 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 XMS2 PC2-8500C5 TwinX
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Corsair HX 850W Psu
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA

Depending on your budget, you could stick in a q6600/q9550, thats if you want to stick with your current s775 kit. You have some very good parts there as it is.

i was thinking of going for a i7/i5 but to be honest i dont really know what the difference is

i just thought it would be a bit more future proof :)
would a i5 670 3.46GHz give me a nice boost in peformance when playing games and extracting files?

Gaming wise youl only see a bit of a benefit it titles that are quad core optimised, other tasks such as encoding, rendering would benefit a lot more.

A q9550 on a p5q deluxe would be very good. (had that combo myself), 3.8ghz with ease, very cool running as well.

You could get a cheapish quad to put in your board for now and do a major upgrade next year when the new cpu's from intel and amd are out.

thanks :) i didnt actually know about the new cpu's so i think ill just wait and save as much cash as i can to get a decent one
