So, get home after what I'd say was a fairly hard ride... back bike in, begin putting chain though wheel and BANG!

Something hit the trailer next to the bike... I'm thinking what the bloody hell was that? is someone throwing things at me or did something fall off the roof?!?!?

No....

It was this:

Which came off of this:

Now... am I the next Rossi who is overheating his rear suspension on the road? or are my settings so far out that loads of heat is being generated? The end cap is actually distorted.

Maybe a combination of the hard ride + hot weather we have been getting?

Does not seem right it should be doing that even in those circumstances though! What if it happened on the road and took some pedestrian out at the ankles? :D

Is it that whole red thing or just the black cap? I dont ever remember seeing a red cap on the 600RR before, maybe its a storage/transport cap and not meant to be there when riding...?

Id guess its just the black cap, the red bit is the top off a chain lube aerosol can!

Could have a slight leak on that valve which has pressurised behind the cap?

It is indeed on a chain lube lid.

Went for another run after and the reservoir was so hot I could only touch it for a second or two, seems very odd to get _that_ hot, hot weather or not.

Look at the location of the exhaust pipe...

However, no gas should ever be escaping from the Schrader valve in the reservoir. If it is the valve is faulty.

It's quite possible that the plastic cap seals so well that the small amount of air trapped behind it generated enough pressure to pop it off as it warmed up. Drilling a very small hole (e.g. 1mm or less) in the cap would prevent this, though put hole at lowest point of cap when fitted to reservoir to ensure any moisture entering can drain out rather than get trapped.
