I have a 2010 iMac that's out of warranty and need to replace the 1TB hdd. Is this model fine to upgrade to SSD without any problems, or will it be easier to stick to a suitable HDD?

The one thing to check is wether it is one of the iMacs where it uses a temperature sensor on the HDD. If so plugging in a HDD/SDD without a sensor will cause your system fans to run at full speed 24/7. I know you can purchase drives with a sensor built in or there are alternative ways to get around it such as shorting the sensor cable with a pin and tape it up or installing something like SMCfancontrol to control your fans yourself.

EDIT: Just had a Google and found that they made this change starting from their 2009 models so yes this is something you will need to deal with.

There is also some software here dedicated to this issue but I'm fairly sure it does the same job as SMCfanControl. None the less it is made by the developers of bartender so I would believe it is trusted and built well.
