hi guys. my dad is interested in buying an iMac (either the 20inch or 24inch) with 2gb ram.

he's happy to install windows in order to play the latest RTS and FPS games. is the iMac a suitable option for him? if so, would the 20inch (with its lesser graphics card) suffice or not?

i know its prob best to get a new PC, but if the iMac can play the latest RTS and FPS games, and those to come (even if its not at top settings), he'd rather have a MAC.

any help/advice would be much appreciated. have done a search, but would like to be sure.

thank you :)

Latest RTS games - yes.

Latest FPS games - yes*

At a limited resolution (probably 1028 x 768) with medium-high graphic settings depending on the game.

The 24" is probably the best, but you're going to have to scale down from 1900 x 1200 if you want to game. Simple ;)

Currently using a 24" iMac with the 7600GT here. Does a good job for games, can run BF2142 max details at 1600x1200 with smooth frame rates (a little juddery in places). HL2 is a complete dream on it though at max details, looks awesome at 1900x1200 aswell.

Sorry bit OT here. What are you using to run those games? Wine?

Well at 1920x1200 everything max it does quite well. I feels around 20fps, but the good news is this doesnt seem to drop during large firefights. It looks awesome at such a high res on such a large screen though :D A*.

awesome, thank you for letting us know. dropping the res down a notch will up the frame rate i presume aswell?

i'm just a little worried about how your iMac will fare in say 2yrs. what do u think? :)

Well with a 7600GT I'll just have to gradually keep dropping the resolution on games. Its not my primary gaming machine (I use it mainly for photo stuff in OS X) so I'm not worried too much, besides gameplay > graphics. Really good for RTS' though and I'm sure it'll last a good while for that kind of stuff. Keep in mind that its a reasonably powerful machine compared to a lot of PC's sold, my friends still play newest games quite reasonably on their 9800Pro's, so like them I'm looking for maybe 3 years of gaming out of it.

awesome! i'm sold :) though will wait for Leopard i think.

You won't regret it :) Best computing purchase I've ever made and as the iMac's design is already well established the whole machine is flawless tbh.
