My dads thinking about a new imac but one of his "must have's" is being able to play half life 2 and the rest of the organge box package :o

I have explained to him that he can do that under bootcamp but how does the entry imac hold up with a upgrade to 2GB ram but with a ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB ?

He's not interested in any other game and everything else will be cool.

Thanks

The 2400 is a bit crap really, I have one in my incredibly cheap Dell box, and it's not exactly a Half-Life 2 beast.

iMacs really arent good for gaming, i did some test on mine and your room needs to very cool to run a game well it heats up a hell of a lot, i tried bf2 on it and it wasnt good!
iMac 2.4ghz
ati 2600
4gig

i really dont recommend them for gaming

Just run it in a lower resolution and see if you can turn the texture quality down. Should run absolutely fine. He will get bored of HalfLife long before the Mac becomes obsolete.

I've played Orange box on my 20inch 2.4 2600 and it runs great. TF2 averages around 60 when I have it on most of the high settings with HDR (no AA). HL2 EP2 was jittery at the start for about 2 minutes but then it ran absolutely fine at high settings with HDR and no AA again.

Your dad should be fine with it, Orange Box is all you need on PC at the moment anyway :D

I hope it runs Starcraft 2 well when it comes out.

It will run. Get the 2600 if you can, and at reasonable resolutions (less than native) it will be perfectly playable. It won't run at 1900x1200 at high resolution with lots of AA and AF, but it will be respectable. If gaming is a main goal then don't get a Mac!
