Hey guys, really hope you can help! Im using an iMac, 17" 1.83ghz core 2 duo, its about 2 months old. Im runnin boot camp with windows xp on it along side Tiger- thats how im using the net right now. So when i try to boot up, as usual i hold Alt to choose my partition, choose Macintosh HD and the grey screen comes up with the spinning circle (not beachball) i can hear the HD churn for a bit, then it stops after about 5 mins, the circle still spins... indefinatly. I thought maybe it might be searching for something on my External drive, so when it turn it on during Boot up I get a Kernal error. Ive tried doing an Apple Hardware test, but nothing wrong there. Ive also tried booting from the install CD, but when i get as far as choosing the Drive to install to, i get a Beachball. Really hope someone can help- cant be assed with sending it to be repaired. Thanks in Advance, Kyle.

Sounds fairly fatal to me. As it is within its warranty, just return it for a brand new model. Failing that, if you live near an official Apple Store, book an appointment at their Genius Bar

does it boot to windows?

boot of the recovery cd, the use disk util to blank out the drive - sorry data will be lost. then try reinstalling it, if disk util can't detect the hdd then its faulty but thats highly unlikely as the hardware test picks up the hdd fine.
