Hi All,

I am looking to order an iMac in the next week or so but looking for a portable sidekick. I have only had a laptop previously and wanted something portable to have with me in the bag or when away from the desk doing light administrative tasks or light coding.

I was thinking about a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 i5/4GB as it would allow a full blown OS to run along with apps like Sublime. I like the Kickstand to leave it on the sideboard and grab when need and use an entertainment device for downtime.

iPad Pro 10.5 if wanting Apple ecosystem but not really fussed if the multitasking isn't up-to scratch.

MacBook M3 but then this maye defeats object of having something small and light.

If you have an iMac what are you guys running as a portable solution to get some ideas?

Thanks.

M7 MacBook (Retina 12-inch, Early 2016) bought from the refurb store.

MacBook: 2.03 lbs
Surface Pro 4 without keyboard: 1.73 lbs
With keyboard: 2.37 lbs

There is an incredibly powerful incentive to stay all Apple, and that is the strong integration between all their products and apps (notes, reminders, photos, etc all seamlessly synced). Safari is an amazing browser compared to the awful horror that is Edge, Chrome is a battery killer so I refuse to use it on a laptop.

The iPad Pro 10.5 is truly incredible, and will be pretty strong in multitasking when iOS 11 is released, but in my own experience I always end up frustrated when trying to do anything more than casual browsing/consumption with it.

Next on my shopping list is the m3 MacBook 2017 with 256GB SSD (ie the base configuration). The 2017 m3 is faster than the 2016 m7 so it's pretty powerful. I'm waiting for it to show up on the refurb store.

Strongly thinking about returning the iPad 10.5 I picked up on a whim and going for the base 2017 MB or Non Touch 13 MBP to be more productive. I initially wanted a laptop replacement but wishful thinking for coding and content creation.

I have a Surface provided through work and tbh, it's not all that. Unless you're going to be writing on the screen a lot (and the Surface Pen is no Apple Pencil) then I'd go with a MacBook.
