Anybody know whether Apple are likely to revamp the iMac (Pro) this year?

Due to get some at work, but would kick myself if a whole new version was out this year rather than a revision.

Looking to buy Q1/Q2.

I always thought the iMac pro was a stop gap machine until the Mac Pro came out, so it's very possible they will retire it from the line up.

It's been 774 days since the iMac pro was released, I find it hard to believe Apple couldn't have refreshed it during that time which lends weight to the idea that it's on it's way out.

Yeeesh, I hope not, given the price of the new Mac Pro.

The iMac Pro is set to caution on the MacRumors buyers guide, and I'd expect a refresh at some point because it's aimed more at small businesses/high-end prosumers and so has it's own market. The new Mac Pro's market is the high end: big studios/corporations with massive budgets who want something customisable as far as heavily favouring processors, RAM or GPU performance (which is why those 'maxed out Mac Pro is $$$$$$$$$' things are a bit silly because no company would want/need to max every aspect of it out).

I hope not as well - I can see myself upgrading this iMac to an iMac Pro in the next year or two.

I imagine that the chassis will upgrade when the iMac upgrades. The base iMac Pro performance is uncomfortably close (exceeded?) by the top iMac performance, so it needs to move further ahead to sit in the gap between iMac and Mac Pro.

I have access to both the i9 iMac and the iMac Pro (an 8 core and 18 core). You're right about the i9 in general use tbh - I.e. if I'm just doing task 'x' and getting on with stuff, I don't feel much difference between the two. Video exporting is also faster on the i9.

Where the 'pro comes in to its own though is doing *more* things. So for example I can set my videos exporting 4k stuff, minimise it, then carry on doing some virtualisation work (usually server stuff). Can't really do that on the i9, grands to a halt a lot faster.

That's even more extreme on the 18 core unit as you'd imagine! Must admit I keep looking at the 8 core and toying with the idea of waiting till it's out of AppleCare and swapping the processor out myself.

What's the worst that could happen.

The iMac Pro has been the best Mac I've ever owned - a phenomenally capable machine.

The iMac Pro is officially dead.

Perfect timing! I was just thinking what could I do with the £5k I had lying around here :D

I suppose on a more serious note when the regular iMac gets the Apple Silicone the performance would be such that the iMac Pro will no longer have a gap in the market?

That's what I think too. There's absolutely nothing wrong with my 2017 iMac but if there's an Mx series iMac released later this year then I think it's very likely I'll buy one.

/edited to reword.

I think there will still be space for a 2 tier iMac line up. A lower tier based similar to what we are already seeing with the Apple silicon - i.e an all in one CPU, completely non-upgradable aimed at the consumer mainstream side of things. Then a markedly higher end tier with possibly an upgradable option such as memory somehow, aimed at the pro users that simply want an all in 1 unit, but much more power underneath and that architecture will be shared with the Mac Pro.

M1/MX iMac 21" + 27" would be such an amazing family computer. Take advantage of the lower power / heat and make it nice and slimline, with a decent webcam.
