The more I google it the more confused I get!

I have a i5 27" imac (with a 4850) which I bought last year. I would like to get an SSD, probably a 128mb OCZ Vertex 2E one fitted as well as the 1tb hard drive.

I gather this is a tricky job to fit yourself and I have a local shop who have said they think they can do it however I keep reading things suggesting problems. I have read a few articles suggesting that although Lion supports trim it only does on Apple supplied SSD drives. I have also read a few articles suggesting that Apple have made it very difficult to fit them after the original purchase from them?

I would be interested to hear from people who have fitted aftermarket ssd drives and wether they encountered any problems and who they got to carry out the work?

Cheers

Dave

If you wait till the weekend I'm in process of doing this so will write up. Have something being delivered tomorrow to sort it out ;)

It's not as hard as you imagine....he says..... Like I say, remind me at the weekend.

I've today managed to succesfully replace the DVD drive in my 27" 2011 iMac with a Crucial C300 SSD.

I've taken some pictures so will write up how to do it. It's not that hard - took me about 30-40 minutes including taking the pictures and some notes.

Made massive difference. With my laptops having SSDs in them the iMac felt slow with the physical drive - no more!

Working just fine by the way. I did look at using the 'proper' SATA port - and not replacing the DVD - but the disassembly process looked hideous. Removing the PSU.Motherboard etc.

Also, couldn't find the right cable.

I never use the DVD anyway, so happy with what I have now.
