Hi guys, I'm thinking of selling my 3 year old imac 27" and buying a mac air. Would I be able transfer all apps/music/photos via time machine onto the new Air?

Yes just use Target disk mode when setting up your new mac. Or use an existing Time Machine backup to essentially restore your old iMac onto your new Macbook Air.

Here for your info;

Migration assistant to clone from your old Mac to your new one. Don't faff about using a time machine backup, just copy from one computer to the other. It's quick and it works incredibly well, I was surprised and very impressed when I did it from a Mac Mini to an iMac.

This. How I personally do it each time:
  1. Connect bog-standard Ethernet cable between both computers (not a patch cable)
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi on both systems
  3. In the Network pane, Ethernet, Configure IPv4, select manually, enter an IP address on both systems (eg. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2).
Then just open Migration Assistant on both systems and follow the instructions :)
