iMac vs Macbook Pro?

I finished Uni in 2004, but if I was making the decision right now, I'd go with a laptop every time.

When I was there, I had a pretty decent Desktop PC, but laptops had just started getting good, especially the PowerBooks. I remember how useful it was when we had group projects if somebody had a laptop, plus if you had one you could plug it into a projector for presentations, along with taking it wherever you needed it.

The other benefit is not having to lug home your desktop, monitor and peripherals.

Thats funny, it's as bad as the older days of Quicktime. Fork out 2k for a laptop and they can't throw in a puny cable.

The Apple monitors don't support HDMI, so why should they? It's a consumer AV spec connector with limited resolution support.

Until Apple switched to Mini-DP/Thunderbolt Apple always included a DVI-VGA adaptor with the machine.

OP - Get the MBP, plus an external monitor. If you need additional storage then get FW800 drives.

Personally, selling my 27inch imac was probably the dumbest thing I've ever done. Boosted my productivity far more than my MBP ever did. MBPs are pretty damn heavy also so lugging one around uni isn't exactly ideal. I've got a MBA for uni now and I'm waiting for the iMac refresh before I rebuy one.

Can have pretty much 6 A4 pages on the iMac screen at once due to the res and the picture quality is just immense. Great for doing work on and the keyboard is very comfy to use also for extended periods of time.

My personal choice would be iMac, but when they are refreshed to ivybridge.

One criticism of the iMac no one has mentioned, is that unlike the MBP you can't easily upgrade the hard drive - whether that's an issue is your call.

I just stuck a 750Gb Hybrid Seagate drive in my Macbook in a minute and it's a great speed upgrade. Turns out it's more effort than it's worth to put one in my iMac..

If I was buying again I'd have seriously examined MBP + Thunderbolt monitor..

There is no messing with the fact that a 27" screen is fantastic - whether that's an iMac or cinema display is a different question though..

In my opinion:

For only work use/home use/portable : Macbook Pro

For Home use/work use and something fun for home: iMac, iPad.

Thats my take on the situation and I have a iMac, Macbook, iPad. :p :)

If I had to have single computer I would take the Macbook Pro over the iMac anytime.
Not only you will have the X Factor at Uni with the shiny new Macbook Pro, it can be used as desktop easily with external monitor.

Macbook Pro + iPhone.

C'mon iPad for Uni work!!! seriously?
