Having a damn nightmare with the Mrs' Intel Imac.

It would appear to connect to our wireless access point ok but will not pick up an IP address, just self assigns a 169.*.*.* one. If I just turn the airport off and on again it gets an IP. I've done the usual, cleared all the access point lists and re-entered passwords, run the updates etc. Even wiped and loaded the damn thing last night, but to no avail.

The MacBook Pro works just fine on the same access point

BTW the router is a Draytek 2800VG latest firmware etc., and set to WPA2.

Ideas or thoughts appreciated.

Get the MBP and iMac side by side and go through the Networking preference pane and the Internet Connect app. Compare the settings and see if there's anything fairly obvious you might have missed.

Might be an idea to manually assign them their own IPs and see if that makes life easier.

I thought Macs were perfect and everything just worked? :p

(sorry)

Believe me when you've 2 macbook pros go bang in a big way in the last 9 months you'll appreciate that that's a load of old <insert words of choice here> :(

I've tried setting it manually, and still the only way it will connect is if the airport is cycled off and on again.

I'll bring a netgear router home from the office tomorrow and see if it could be the router. I've now had 4 of the Drayteks (in different offices) and to be honest the stability of the wireless on all of them using Windows PCs has be way less than satisfactory, which is a shame because everything else about them is pretty good. This one at home has been fine for months with the MBP.

I think I read somewhere that the wireless on draytek's isnt actually certified, unlike other manufacturers products. No idea who the certificating body is.

That would be the IEEE who certifies wireless standards, as for your problem have you tried entering the wpa2 or other keys via the airport tab in network preferences, that usually sorts erroneous ip addresses for me

Ditto, had this problem with a few networks and this sorted them.
