iMacs and dvd playing - help!

Hi there!

I have a 2ghz iMac G5, which has its DVD drive set to Region 1, after the 5 region changes have been used up.

Quick question - If I buy an external DVD drive, and plug it in via USB - will I be able to play Region 2 films through it?

Dont want to have to buy a TV and DVD player!!

your in luck as you have a PowerPC Mac, download a program called VLC it will allow you to watch DVDs from any region without needing to change your drive region

Nope, it wont work as the drive has already been locked - VLC simply wont play any discs apart from Region 1!

Are you sure? I was under the impression that VLC doesn't look at the region coding?

If you use VC on the external you should be fine.

I have seen VLC fail on Macs with the 5 regions changes used up.

I'm sure the drives in the PPC Macs have region free firmware kicking around, as long as its not a Matsushita!

So if I use VLC and an external drive, it should work fine then?
