I have a freeware programme to make family trees etc. Unfortunately to encourage you to buy it (£200) they introduce watermarks when you print.
As a workaround I have used print screen and paint to enable me to print.
If in the future I want to edit it say. add a new family member, I would need to use image editing software. If that is the only way to do it, can someone recommend the file format to save the paint file for the future.
Paint used to default as BMP but now defaults as PNG. Both of these will open on a PC but which is more favourable for image editing software. BMP, GIFF, TIFF, JPEG or PNG and can someone suggest free image editing software either on-line or download.
Thanks for your help.

Can't really help with the file format since it's not something I do much of but I usually save things as PNG.

For free image editing software, the following are usually recommended:
GIMP
Paint.NET
