Image in html?

I have an image in jpeg and png format. when i try to import it into dreamweaver to use as background the area remains white, when I put it in as an image it has the grey graphic as if the picture isnt in the file. When i write the actually html code using img src i just get a red cross. any ideas?

What is your file structure like and where is your image in relation to the html page?

Thanks for the reply but i've sorted it now, think it had something to do with bit depth. sorry for waisting your time
