Image Recognition

Hi folks.

I'm looking to do some basic image recognition (recognising a square shape for example) as part of my course at uni. What I was wondering was if anyone has any experience with this field, and also what languages people have programmed in. I've used java, C++ and C# the most, so if you've got any recommendations, let me know.
