Image viewer that fades website into background?

I've seen loads of websites using an image viewer that fades the rest of the site into the background, is this a default plugin that sites are using or just a specific technique that is being used to obtain the effect?

Any pointers would be great thanks.

lightbox technique or modal window is what they are called...loads of versions, and I mean loads. Are we talking a wordpress or cms based site?
