After going through shedloads of these, most of them outdated, I stumbled upon GPicview (from LXDE). I was very impressed with it's speed.
Easy enough to get from the homepage, your repository or something like getdeb.net.

Very fast, scales well, next to no dependencies & can save out files in other formats.
Although given it's roots as a lightweight LXDE app I doubt it will ever match something like Irfanview.
It is good though, try it out ;)

Functionally, Gpicview is very simliar to EoG. (gnome image viewer) but it's a tad faster.

Yeah LXDE runs fast. Been using Xfce 4.6 for a bit here. It's pretty good too. A nice middle ground of features/performance.

I had to use LXDE as my parents were long time XP users, so LXDE looks the same, but runs quicker :)

I'd be using LXDE or Xfce more myself if it wasn't for Compiz tbh.
I'm one of the lucky few for which Compiz runs very fast and until I build my new computer I'm not motivated to change.

Metacity/Gnome with the xorg driver is tragic next to LXDE/Xfce it has to be said.
Should see LXDE pick up some more fans over the next few months when they start shipping the Lubuntu variant.
