For an IT assignment I was told to spec a computer for a "client" for £1000 excl vat. He will use it as a database and for general operations for his carpet business. What would you spend the money on? (I have already done the assignment, just wandered what you guys would do).

Serious answer: the Primo Pterosaur and £600's worth of alcohol, video games and strong pornography.

"Look, it's a Sandy Bridge QUAD CORE with 64 BITS OS and 4 GIGS OF RAM MEMORY".

Anything above an intel atom is pretty much overkill, but this way the guy thinks he's got a cracking PC.

I'd get a Dell of some kind for the on-site support, and a network / backup solution. That includes the support and software costs.

For business, you don't need a £1000 rig. You'll be better off with a OEM.

OP: Sounds like you are doing one craptacular qualification if you do assignments on that.

It's a GCE AS. The qualification doesn't revolve around the spec itself. You just need to explain what each component does and why he would choose that in a business environment. It's one of about 20 assignments in the year.

EDIT: He "wants to spend the full amount" so I have to buy him something ridiculous ^^

Answer is simple!
Buy a £350 OEM Dell as it come with better warranty than a self built system; and charge the customer the full £1000 including your service charges (they don't expect you to work for nothing do they?)!!
