So on my network is a scanner that's quite old. The manufacturer provide 32bit TWAIN drivers for it. I have other scanners on the network also (including some with 64bit TWAIN drivers, and some with WIA support) but it's this one with 32bit TWAIN drivers that is the problem.

On my computer I run Windows 7 64bit, and I have Adobe Creative Suite CS4. Photoshop CS4 32bit can use the scanner perfectly, but alas not every computer on the network has Creative Suite :(. Other programs (including Photoshop 64bit) can only see other scanners that have 64bit TWAIN drivers or WIA support, they cannot see this 32bit TWAIN scanner.

So on my Win7 64bit computer:
  • Photoshop CS4 32bit can use the scanner perfectly as a TWAIN device.
  • Photoshop CS4 64bit cannot see that the scanner exists.
  • MS Paint cannot see that the scanner exists.
  • Paint.Net cannot see that the scanner exists.
  • GIMP cannot see that the scanner exists.

So far, the only other program than Photoshop 32bit that I have on my computer that can access the scanner is Microsoft Clip Organiser (Start → All Programs → Microsoft Office → Microsoft Office 2010 Tools → Microsoft Clip Organiser. File → Add Clips to Organizer → From Scanner or Camera.) This will be because I installed the 32bit version of MS Office 2010, and it will then call the 32bit TWAIN driver.

Going and buying Photoshop for the other computers on the network seems like overkill when all I want software to do is open the 32bit TWAIN scanner driver and import to save as a JPG. I'm happy doing all the editing in Paint.net/GIMP as normal.

So... other than Photoshop 32bit and Microsoft Clip Organiser, what other Software is out there that can use a TWAIN scanner?
