Right,

Currently have a 500Gb SATA HDD in my case and want to put in a 1Tb. I cant be bothered to format and then reinstall all my apps on it to get it to the current state. So, im looking for an application which can create an image of my existing HDD so i can transfer it to the new 1Tb HDD.

Whats the best way to do it and what software do i need?

also, there's tons of free software, like driveimagexml

the only ones i've used are acronis & ghost, what make are the hard drives, some manufacturers have tools to do this on their websites

If you use Vista Business/Premium, you can use the Backup utility within them, which is actually very good and works well for backup and restore...

Or Acronis True Image Home 11

Or if you have a Seagate or Maxtor installed on your system, you could use either DiscWizard or MaxBlast which is basically ATI 10 with a couple of very basic features removed....
